Romain on 2023 & 2022:
2023 – Agreable! We had enough grapes – we had a big rain right at the end of the harvest which had some hail in it but it was right and the end and the rest of the year was quite easy – of course very lucky that the hail came right at the end not the beginning. 22 was different because it was both hot and dry – the nights were hot too – which we didn’t have in 23 so that helpd the 23s – we had to be vigilant with the 22s in the cuverie – fortunately the volatiles were kept in order.

The wines…

Classy 2022s but the finishing 2021 had that extra ‘sparkle!’

Only natural cork is used here. All these wines were already bottled, the Mâcons were done in August:

2022 Mâcon-Chaintre Les Serreuxdières
All tank elevage.
Forward and deep – nicely complex citrus with a little lime complexity too. Hmm – a sweetness to start then more strict and mouth-watering in the finish – a small rigour to this wine today. But deliciously, broadly finishing – yum!

2022 Mâcon-Fuissé Les Bruyères
Plain north-facing. Some blue-stone and schist here. Not originally classed as Pouilly-Fuissé as these vines were north-facing.
Hmm – more vertical and really appealing. The flavours are more intense but also wider – I love the slightly strict structure here always with a vibration of energy…

2022 Pouilly-Fuissé
An assembly of all the parcels not in the ‘climat’ wines. Only old vines planted by Romain’s grandfather. Bottled in August before the harvest, this principally in tank – only old vines – no clones.
Fuller, ripe but not over-ripe aromas. Direct, still a small impression of oak (10%) again direct, sweetly perfumed then a broad delicious finish – yum!

2022 Pouilly-Fuissé Les Plessys
Very old vines with less rich soil here – with fine clays from the erosion of the limestone. A mix of standard sized barrels and 600-litre demi-muids.
Floral accents – more open. Direct, more green fruit in this complexity. Large in the finishing flavours – it shrinks but then holds – delicious in the finish!

And for the road:

2021 Pouilly-Fuissé 1er Les Chevrières
Only 10-20 cm of soil before hitting the rock but very red from the iron-oxides then it’s the limestone of Chaintré. All demi-muid elevage.
More direct, more mineral, almost a hint smoky. Mineral and with a wonderful purity of finishing citrus. That’s a really great 2021!
