Laurent having officially retired will of-course be found working around the winery or in the vines, but like last year he has the respite of not having to talk with journalists – but he seems a happy man. Last year I met Adeline in the cuverie, this year it’s Solange. Solange is very welcoming and marginally less tight-lipped than Papi!
Solange on 2019:
“Fewer grapes than in 2018, similar degrees, but plenty of roasted grapes. The fermentations were fine, long, but much like 2018. The malos of the 2019s are now underway.”
Solange on 2018:
“2018 was almost double the volume of grapes that we normally work with, typically we have yields of 40 hl/ha or lower. We had some worry because of the heat and potential degrees of alcohol but in the end we can be happy.”
The wines…
It’s the vintage – practically no salinity – but at this address there’s some very fine minerality!
Although some bottlings were made in April, all these wines were tasted from barrel:
2018 Chablis
There was a small bottling in April, but the most part will be bottled in late Spring.
A nice round, very attractive nose. Round, with clarity of flavour, slightly mineral. The middle and finish are vibrant. A little rounder than normal here, but delicious wine.
‘Similar terroir to Côte de Léchets, but a bit more argilles blanches. Otherwise, it’s the same exposure, 400 metres as the crow flies.’
An aromatic sweetness but also the mineral is more accentuated, almost floral too. That’s lovely in the mouth, vibrant, mineral and longer. Bravo! I don’t say that about many Beauroys!
2018 Chablis 1er Cote de Léchets
Wider, a more mineral, almost petrol minerality. Bigger, more energetic, vibrant wine – completely delicious, perfectly Chablis.
‘Actually its Forêts but I didn’t want confusion with the similar label of Vincent Dauvissat,’ says Laurent.
A more floral mineral freshness. Bright, the most intense yet, layered, vibrant wine. Directly bravo Chablis! Super finishing, so many dimensions here – great wine.
