New premises here for the domaine – really new – you could still smell the paint. The old house and tasting room in the old centre of Chablis are now sold.

Claire on 2019:
The quality is great but it’s such a low quantity, less than either 2016 or 2017 for us. There was some frost and the damage was more than we initially thought. Then came a summer with not a drop of rain – so volume-wise we are about one-third down – roughly 40 hl/ha. We are still a little down if I average the last two years production, and we didn’t take VCI as we knew that it would be extra-complicated due to moving to this new building..

Claire on 2018:
Extraordinary – we’d take that every year. Of course, we had to send some wine for distillation – it’s a shame because all of it was good in the vintage!

The wines…

A very good result for the domaine, some real salinity in some wines – and that’s rare in this vintage.

All bottled July august except a first wave of Chablis bottling in April – as there was no more wine to sell:

2018 Petit Chablis
Next to Montmains a bit more than a hectare close to Butteaux.
A nose with an attractive mix of citrus and faint herb. Nice drive and lovely texture in the mouth – it’s structured but nothing hard. Deliciously fresh. Lovely wine. Yum! A finish that suggests that I should wait another 6 months for. Lovely wine.

2018 Chablis
An extra width of freshness. More vibrant – here’s a lovely energy. Wide, ingraining. That’s a great 2018 Chablis of minerality – again wait a little and there’s even a little touch of tannin.

2018 Chablis 1er Vaillons
A big, bright fresh nose again. Less direct energy but with a more width of mineral flavour – a touch saline and lot mineral – this is very Chablis and super wine. A nice finishing cushioning to the texture so nothing hard. Excellent!

2018 Chablis 1er Montmains
A little more floral perfumed. Yes! Lovely drive. This has energy and super minerality. No hard edges. Just excellent wine – no it’s even better than that – bravo!
2018 Chablis 1er Mont de Milieu
A calmer nose, more elegant more floral, more Vaillons than Montmains. Ooh – that’s super again – very mineral. A weight of finishing flavour. Lots of salinity here – rare in 2018 – for that, bravo!

2018 Chablis 1er Montmains Vieilles-Vignes
From 57 year-old vines, in Butteaux.
A little more floral than the ‘base’ Montmains. More depth of flavour – perhaps a little more concentrated too – a suggestion of richness but that’s the extra depth of concentration. This is very tasty wine, easier today than the other Montmains despite its extra concentration, but only because of that textural help. Great finishing.
