Laurence on 2017:
Really it’s not much better than in 2016. We were strongly frosted, we have about 35% of a normal volume. Whilst a small volume vintage, the wines look really good – it’s just a shame that there’s not much.

Laurence on 2016:
“2016 – frost! But were lucky enough not to be too harshly touched – just one parcel where about half was lost. Hail! The first hail hit and we lost 70%, second hail came and of-course that didn’t help. Mildew required 14 treatments – then there was a semi drought! The vintage was as much emotional as physical. The grapes in the end were not bad – not great wines for keeping but they have a nice balance. But yet again about 30% of our normal – so it’s not much more than half a vintage that we’ve made in 2 years here!

The wines…

A small range of wines in 2016, but very nice to beautiful results, depending on the cuvée.

Currently it’s all ‘technical corks’ of Trescases just at the moment – there was a time with DIAM but then one cuvee had a problem and the bottler and DIAM were blaming each other and it was really difficult to get a resolution – so today it’s just Trescases…

2016 Petit Chablis
A modest nose of pretty fruit. Round, fine, delicious fruit on the palate, the flavour melting over the tongue – as good as a villages in many vintages. The acidity going long in the finish but nothing sharp here – excellent!

2016 Chablis
A little more aromatic volume, a fresh purity too. Ooh, but delicious, fresh – nicely round but a beautiful blend of fresh and complex pure flavour – more in the direction of the fruit than minerality but not with overt richness. Delicious.

2016 Chablis 1er Homme Mort
The nose is wide, a little mineral rigour here – showing it’s recent bottling. Wide, muscled, mineral but not austere. Faintly saline, long, long. The laest approachable of all the wines today – a wine for keeping a couple of years – but there’s great material.

2016 Chablis 1er Fourchaume
Tasted from tank.
Ooh what a lovely and wide nose with a fine floral accent too. Lots of fresh width, lots of complexity, long this is really excellent – bravo – this wine is showing brilliantly today.
