Gauthier, 2023 vs 2022:
“The last vintage like 2023 was 1982 – for me it’s year like 1982 or 1990 – everything worked. While 2022 was hot and dry and there was some blocking of maturity in places – but a little rain fixed that – 22 is white fruit and energy it’s lovely for the restaurants for instance and the alcohols weren’t so high. It was hard to find good biodynamic dates in July to bottle so we did it in June!”
The wines….
Without designating any single wine ‘geat’ this remains a great selection of wines – well done!
The domaine bottles with DIAM for the UK importer, Wine Society, the rest is with cork.
2022 Quintaine
Early harvested – we were finished in early September
A very elegant aromatic – I haven’t tasted another like it today – smelled! There’s a generosity to this flavour but without losing the backbone of energy. I think that’s lovely and I expect it to be starting to drink really well in 3-5 years
2022 Viré-Clessé Retour a la Terre
The last harvest of the vintage but only 12.7° – with elevage in jars.
A smaller but equally elegant nose. Rich again but not at the expense of energy once more – silky and mouth-filling. Faintly zesty finishing. You will have to wait for complexity but it’s a beautiful thing in the mouth already!
2021 Sophie et Gautier Guillermot-Michelot, Charlestone
Bottled in February ‘lots of grains nobles in 2021’
A different world of depth, of concentrated – visible – ripe fruit and here the aromas are more vertical. Such scale in the mouth – wow wine – like a desert wine in some respects but without any unbalanced sweetness. “You can drink it on its own – but with St.Jacques…!”
Cremant
Just 4g natural – disgorged only 5 days before.
Hmm – now that’s very attractive – airy ripe yellow and white fruit. Delicious in the mouth – hmm – direct, intense but never hard or abrasive – that’s another beauty – a great range this year!
