Caroline on 2023:
“23 – Big smile – a volume like 23 but we had a bit more phenolic and aromatic maturity.”
Caroline on 2022:
“We worried about frost at the start of the year. A big rain at the end of June meant that we had no worries about water over the summer – a couple of smaller rains meant we could mature in a steady fashion. Starting our harvest 24 August. I think 2022 a very good vintage for us – like 2020 – since we started we averaged 40 hl/ha but we have more in 22 – 45hl/ha. pH is a little higher and the style of the wine has a bit more richness than 2020 but still a nice finesse All have been bottled. 21 was a little varietal but 22 is more about the climats.”
The wines…
Delicious, typically juicy wines – as so often in this vintage.
All cork with a small wax topping ‘So allows me the chance to buy the best corks of 54mm.’
2022 Mâcon-Villages Clos St Pancras
A clos of 3.5 hectares in the north Mâconnais near Clessé and the river – the higher part has a very limestone soil, more clay below. ‘These vines suffered the least but still only 40% of a normal harvest, despite using candles in some areas. I find more harmony in the less frosted wines.’ 11 months in foudres, bottled at the start of August.
A richness and depth of ripe citrus aroma. A hint of gas but broad, silky, and joyously deliciously juicy – so tasty!
2022 Viré-Clessé Les Raspillères
The heghts of Viré under the mountain – 20-year-old vines that take their time to ripen
Aromatically more fresh energy. Again vibrant and juicy but with a hint more oak padding and sweetness – but only a hint. Super, intense and saline at this great finish!
2022 St.Véran Prélude
2 parcels – an early and a later ripening parcel.
Hmm – good extra volume in the mouth – more saline and shaped – a mix of foudres and demi-muids. A calmer but no less delicious finish.
2022 Pouilly-Fuissé Pastoral
2 parcels in Vergission – ‘one early and another late one. We look a little for that.’
A more shy nose – but with a little generosity and implied silk. Some gas but extra clarity in the large – scaled wine – the oak visible but modest – wait 1-2 years – but another delicious and juicy wine!
2022 St.Véran La Fournaise
Vines in Prissé – ‘we have to wait for this one’ – demi-muids elevage.
A deeper, slightly more open nose. More direct, fine intensity – growing and filling the mouth – this is really super. Saline and a hint of barrel – just a top wine considering it’s been bottled only a couple of days…
In Chasselas – this is one of the latest ripening – but west-facing 70 year old vines
Depth again with a suggestion of oak. Hmm – wide, more tension/mineral – super intensity and a vibration of finishing flavour – really great!!
