“I have 107 barrels vs the 63 that I produced in 2021…”

“I remained ‘organic’ for the whole year. I was one of the first picking on the Saturday 18th September but really happy as my grapes were so clean. Rain came on Sunday and I didn’t pick that day. That rain was the start of a little botrytis, so those picking 1 week later had to sort up to 15% due to the botrytis that developed after the rain. It was difficult to get the sort of ‘full ripeness’ seen in other recent years – as we clearly had much less sun. I was worried when I first filled the barrels, as I thought the wines quite lite – I didn’t find myself in the barrels – but we saw the wines grow and grow in stature as the elevage unfolded. I will rack in January, bottle in February and start to sell in April!”

2021 Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits Cuvée Maelie
Named for Guillaume’s daughter. Vines from Conceour, just above Vosne-Romanée; 40-year-old vines, no new oak, rather with one and two-year-old barrels
Ooh – bright, pure very pretty red fruit aromas. Supple, fine texture, slightly generous texture. Delicious.
2021 Côte de Nuits Villages
1.4 ha in Comblanchien in Aux Bullards, this the first vintage.
More depth of aroma. Broader, a little more concentration is visible. In the finish too, this is wide and concentrated. I prefer the extra freshness of the previous wine but this is very good all the same. The last drops in the glass ate very perfumed
2021 Fixin La Place
The lieu-dit, near Fissey. 45-year-old vines, near the route de grand cru.
Silky red fruit but a little aromatically tight. Silky texture too, a little narrower on the palate but with more open access to the flavours. Fine red fruit finishing. The tannins are gentle here.
2021 Chambolle-Musigny Les Athets
50 year-old vines.
Very pretty aromatics – a fine cliché Chambolle. Spreading nicely over the palate – beautiful – simply excellent wine – as, seemingly, every year.
From the north of the village
Not large scale but a beautiful nose that just pulls you into the glass. Perfect texture, slowly some tannin shows itself, almost in a velour style. A burst of extra finishing flavour and of width, slightly stony as the last notes. Maybe even a little better than excellent!
2021 Nuits St.Georges La Bas du Combe Vielles-Vignes
85-year-old vines – on the border of Vosne and Nuits – the oldest of the domaine.
Deep, sumptuously fruited – the impression of a big cushioned hug. More direct, almost a little muscular – but athletic muscle. A little salinity in the finish – again a textbook Nuits – except for the gentleness of the tannin…
2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Champerrier Vieilles-Vignes
Almost 70-year-old vines.
A broader nose the purity of fine red cherry slowly lifting from the glass. Hmm, that melts really well over the palate. Super intensity, so delicious and just so easy to drink. It starts wide and quickly narrows but is never anything other than completely delicious.
2021 Nuits S.Georges 1er Aux Argillas
‘From the north of Nuits, not the southern Argillières!’ Just under Thorey
More open, sparkly. More direct. Cushioned structure but with super finesse – velvety. Super wine!
2021 Echézeaux Les Treux
On the flat near Grands-Echézeaux. 85-year-old vines from 0.3 hectares. All new oak this year.
Here is depth and plenty of barrel spice. Supple, just so silky, slowly velvet-textured. A wine of simply beautiful finesse. Slowly fading. Almost understated, the balance is just so good.
