Romaric on 2022 & 2021:
“Really happy with the 22 harvest – it was a good volume. 2021 was of course down but possibly because we prune very late – we only lost about 25%! Of course, our normal grape contracts were decimated though – so it’s still quite a small volume vintage for us. We’ve been organic since 2003 and we think our vines are very well adapted to the conditions these days – to an extent, even the more difficult conditions of 2021! Because the 2020s are already sold out, the 2021s will have to be allocated without a place for new customers. We had 9 cuvées in 2021 compared to the usual 12.”
The wines…
A good range of wines – the relative stars being the domaine’s Côte de Nuits Villages and their 1er cru Les Fuées – look out for them.
All bottled end of August:
2021 Bourgogne Chardonnay
In this vintage, from the commune of Chambolle like the red Bourgogne
A very forward nose. Ripe and energetic citrus. Mineral, silky – slowly broadening over the palate. A calm but tasty style, the fruit almost with an exotic dimension.
Les Reds:
2021 Bourgogne Pinot Noir
90% from the commune of Chambolle the rest from the commune of Vosne. All stainless-steel elevage – no barrels for this.
Very open pinot fruit – and good detail too. This sits very well in the mouth, the faintest of cushion and picture-perfect cushioned but pure red fruit. Almost a little creamy – absolutely delicious wine!
For 15 years they used to have Retraits – next to the Clos de la Marechale – but when these vines were sold by the owner to Château Crée (announced to the domaine only a couple of weeks before the harvest) they changed to a new owner with vines in Montagne – it’s now 3 years with this parcel. Some amphora elevage in this too.
Deep but finely perfumed. Shaped with a little structure but a flavour profile that melts over the palate – that’s really a step up from an already delicious Bourgogne – Bravo HCDNV!
2021 Savigny-Lès-Beaune
From Les Ratteuses and, Dessus les Vermots – quite some distance between the two
Depth of aroma; round, comfortable red fruit. Round in the mouth too – this is ripe and cushioned – lots of sucrosity. Just completely delicious.
2021 Gevrey-Chambertin
A single parcel, but covering two climats.
Narrower but still a nose of impressive depth. Wide, decent intensity – even a little minerality. I like the finish but this is the first wine in this range that seems shy and less interesting to taste, today.
2021 Chambolle-Musigny Les Nazoires
Higher toned and more width of aroma – very nice. There’s a bit of structure in this broad-flavoured wine. But there’s also plenty of delicacy and complexity to these flavours. Keep 2-3 years and I think you’ll be quite happy – the finish is lovely!
2021 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Les Lavrottes
Only 4 proprietors of this cru, 3 of whom make their own wine.
Narrow again but with fine depth and clarity – almost a little almond complexity to go with the florals in this one. Broad with a mix of minerality and slightly cushioned fruit. Slowly mouth-watering in a long finish. Keep it 5 years, it will be very good.
2021 Chambolle-Musigny 1er les Chatelots
‘A small depression in the terroir here that brings a bit more power and warmth in the mouth.’
Deep and complex, only slowly adding interesting higher tones. Nicely cushioned again, ripe but still fruit of clarity. The minerality still visible here and nothing in excess. Broad finishing and only very slowly fading – here towards the mineral scale of flavours. Again keep this – maybe a little less time is required – 3-5 years. It’s going to be very tasty.
2021 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Les Fuées Vieilles-Vignes
A major part of these vines are 75 years old.
Here is more aromatic power and density, aeration augmenting the higher-toned finesse. The best combination of shape, structure and concentration of all these wines – melting with fine, darker-fruited flavour. This, is easily the most complete of the 1ers and with a very sneaky, almost haunting finish. That’s simply excellent!
