This was my first tasting of 2021 reds, indeed, it was the first time too that Cécile had tasted her wines since the 2022 harvest.

Cécile on 2021:
This year we fought; it was a war in the vines, the frost-hit parts were terrible and I didn’t make them but the other parts there was more wine than in 2020 – a couple of 1er crus – where the grapes were sufficient but empty! In the end we made about the same in 2021 as in 2019 – but only where not frosted! I decided to just make a Vosne 1er. The Bourgogne was not bad as it wasn’t frosted there. My end result was about 30% less wine than average. It took a lot of energy to make these 21s – maybe we like them more because of that!

From the 1st of January 2021, Cécile had 3 more hectares in Morey villages and 1.8 hectares of Vosne-Romanée 1er Beaumonts – 0.20 is pulled out to replant. There are 2 parcels still to come – but in 10 years!

The wines…

Despite tasting in September, a range of class here – no surprise!

2021 Bourgogne Côte d’Or
A blend from Vosne and Chambolle
Medium colour, a small waft of oak becoming redder and more transparent with air. This is a gentle, complex and delicious wine that expands over the palate – faint bitters in the end – with a supple creaminess too. Absolutely delicious wine.

2021 Morey Saint Denis
Airy, just a little more perfumed. Broadening quickly over the palate, more intense, modestly more structural – the oak also more visible in the finish – but surprisingly deliciously creamy oak. Top…
2021 Chambolle-Musigny Cabotte
Multiple parcels – 3 – Fremiers, Au Echanges and Maladières – in the domaine since 2009
Whole cluster and no sulfur but it will receive some before bottling…
Not a large aroma but what perfume! Airy, red fruits plus flowers. A wine with an extra expressiveness and less overt tannin. Top.

2021 Vosne-Romanée Vieilles-Vignes
From the clay soils…
A little extra width and precision to the aromas, open but not forceful. Mouth-filling, bubbling with energy and really super energy to finish – a wine that grows in stature. Slowly, slowly fading…

2021 Nuits St.Georges 1er Les Murgers
‘A tiny harvest – lots of frost here. I only search for the fruit in Nuits so this is all destemmed.’
There’s more power to these aromas, still perfumed, round, and nicely formed. Direct, wonderfully textured – energy, depth, a complete experience – still plenty of creamy oak today but all is here – bravo!

2021 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Feuselottes
Only this one, as the other Chambolles were too low in volume.
Not a wide nose but an up and down one – vertical – there’s energy to this perfume. Direct, energy, structure super wine.

2021 Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru
Rouges and Beaumonts blended
Starting with a little reduction and then becoming super silky. A wine of direction and cool fruit – really juicy finishing – not a wine that lacks for any concentration. Super.

2021 Echézeaux du Dessus
A wine that grows in the glass – the aromas becoming rounder, nicely complex, growing in top notes. Hmm, energy, shape, still very direct. An accent of structure in the finish. Beautiful!

2021 Chapelle-Chambertin
From Gemeaux
Darker colour. Very faintly reductive, darker fruit. Direct, ultra-silky, more impressive density and mouth-watering flavour versus the Echezeaux and extra-juicy finishing. Simpüly excellent wine…
