Justine on 2022:
This year was a really early harvest; I started on 25 August but we need only 5 days so we also finished in August – with 30 pickers.

Justine on 2021:
21 will be bottled at the end of Spring. It was hardly half a harvest – from the domaine’s 6 hectares, all organic certified. I like to use some whole bunch when the grapes are quite ripe but I didn’t use any stems in this vintage.

The wines…

Justine has produced some lovely, indeed very attractive, wines. At this, still, early stage of elevage they don’t seem quite so impressive as her great 2020s for that vintage.

18 months elevage done here so some of the wines might show a little reduction says Justine:

2021 Bourgogne Pinot Noir
From one parcel on the other side of road from the Clos de Vougeot, and one in commune of Vosne-Romanée. Of course, it could be labelled Côte d’Or if they wanted…
A deep nose, dark, modestly oaky but with good flavour dimension. Open, cool fruit, slowly, intensely growing then some finishing bitters – thats properly serious wine – give it a little time, but good stuff.

2021 Mores St.Denis Les Crais
The other side of the road from Magnien’s cuverie. The same parcel as the white. Three barrels – half the normal amount.
Narrower, higher toned, becoming wider and purer that’s a lovely purity of fruit. Slightly structural in shape, with a nice texture for balance. Quite perfumed finishing too – that’s a lovely wine – wait two years.

2021 Chambolle-Musigny
The biggest cuvée of the domaine – 2 hectares of vines, a mix of over 10 small parcels.
Hmm – more airy, floral clearly a step up in clarity. Lovely texture, this is delicious and with proper depth of flavour too – simply excellent wine.

2021 Chambolle-Musigny Aux Croix
This parcel was riper, maybe because it’s trained perpendicular to most of the other vines and Justine finds the soil has much in common with the 1er crus – so this vintage vinified apart and used about 40% whole clusters too.
A nose that’s a little more compact today but with an enticing width of aroma at its base. Incisive again but a little fuller in the mouth. The structure showing a little more but the melting, faintly saline accented, flavour is really very fine. Keep this a little longer but this is a classy Chambolle!

2021 Vosne-Romanée Les Violettes
Next to the Clos de Vougeot and Echézeaux – planted in 1946, with only a few replacements in here.
Some depth of aroma, slowly growing with a purity of aroma. Wide and energetic. Not deeply concentrated but this has intensity – more direct than the Chambolles. For keeping longer for sure but the purity of the flavour is super.

2021 Vougeot 1er Les Petits Vougeots
Vines that sit just under the Clos de la Perrière, about 40% whole bunch here.
A little saltiness and faint reduction. More supple, fine width, faintly reductive flavour. Actually, comfortably shaped with a fine finish. It needs time – but it’s a good one.

2021 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Les Charmes
One part of this cuvée is just across from Les Amoureusses, plus 3 other small parcels.
Airy, very pretty, some fine precisions of fruit. Fuller, slightly furry tannin. Hmm, extra sucrosity, a little furry tannin but velvet textured. The last drops in the glass are very classy.

2021 Echézeaux
From Combe d’Orveau, just behind the Clos de Vougeot – planted in 1946 by Justine’s grandfather.
Broad aromatics at the base, tighter up top. Structural but with such delicious fruit flavours – complex – finishing flavours are broad and interesting.
