Jane Eyre on 2022:
“There’s not all ripe and good in a vintage like 2022 – which might surprise people.”
Jane Eyre on 2021:
“My 2021 volume was actually good and I managed to pick up some interesting new cuvées so no complaints. That said, for a number of vintages we haven’t had enough wine to sell, so wine is still on allocation – unfortunately.”
The wines…
A fine range of delicious wines – not quite crossing the line into greatness this vintage but still with so much to enjoy.
2021 Côte de Nuits Villages
For the moment, this is the only wine that has been bottled – end of August. Only 40% of the volume of previous vintages and much less whole bunch was used for this 2021 fruit.
Fresh, a little savoury – perhaps a little diam (10) reduction here – but also nice fruit in the background. Supple, beautifully textured, easy, comfortable delicious drinking. Time in the glass and the savoury note is gone – now it’s just an easy, inviting aroma.
2021 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Aux Vergelesses
Now in tank (10 days) to be bottled in November depending on the phase of the moon…
Modest colour. A compact nose but with warm red fruit visible, slowly opening. More structural but open clean, concise/precise. Pretty – in terms of flavour depth is it really a 1er here? – it’s delicious wine though.
2021 Beaune 1er Les Avaux
Modest colour but the nose is quite forward – red fruit that’s almost a little warm and roast in style but then quickly more floral. Good shape and great texture, a modest mineral reduction – a wine that’s clean, open and finishing in a more direct style.
2021 Gevrey-Chambertin
Here with about 15% whole clusters – ‘I couldn’t help myself.’ Racked just a couple of days earlier
Also a tight nose but there is width and an extra register of depth versus the Beaune. Hmm, more incisive, clean, direct, a faint rub of tannin but no grain. Cool fruited flavour. Easy, mouth-watering flavour. Delicious wine again.
2021 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Les Corbeaux
Like all the wines this year – modestly coloured -but so forward and attractive aromatically – floral and pure fruit. Again, it’s the clarity and shape of the wine – its structure – then the mouth-watering style. So delicious and ultimately so moreish – a facet that’s missing in, for example, many 2020s. I love…
2021 Corton Bressandes
This is still in barrel – the fermentation with 30% whole bunch.
Just a beautiful aromatic – deeply perfumed from some well-judged stems. Less effusive – a more compact core – this needs a bit of time to open out over the palate. The finish is a long one. Not as showy as the Corbeaux today but with delicious flavour – give it 2-3 years and return.
And le white:
2021 Santenay Blanc
Golden colour. Golden fruit too with plenty of energy. Incisive, quite direct, slowly leaching its flavour over the palate – juicy wine, easy but delicious – almost dynamic in the finish. Super.
