Romain on 2022:
Very satisfied this year, the yields were good, a bit more in the white than the red but it was needed as 21 was just half a harvest.

Romain on 2021:
As noted, 2021 was just half a harvest. The wines are still in barrel and will be racked soon – I don’t think the wines will need long ageing so I’ll be bottling begore the end of the year. We didn’t have a lot of grapes but we didn’t hesitate to trie hard! It’s the third small vintage in a row, so we have nothing left to sell at the domaine

The wines…

So consistent at this domaine – always completely delicious wines…

First the whites:

2021 Bourgogne Chardonnay
Vines in the commune of Volnay – Les Grandes Terres – Declared as Côte d’Or but it’s not on the label – ‘the labels anyway got enough writing on it!’
Open, easy, if slightly compact aromas. Hmm, but that’s very nicely shaped in the mouth, with good precision, nicely ripe but not too much. Long finishing too. Lots to like here.

2021 Monthelie Sous Roche
No Monthelie as it was all frosted – ‘Not even a case or two of grapes for the Bourgogne …’

2021 Meursault
From vines that were replanted after the frost of 2016.
Width, good shape and a leading edge of interest. Supple, generous but always with a ripeness of fruit – actually quite sweet but long too.

Les Reds:

2021 Bourgogne Pinot Noir
Almost all in the commune of Volnay but there’s a little from Pommard and Meursault too. A little young vines are included, but the average is still over 60 years old
Hmm, thats got a lovely depth of red fruit, slightly cooked. Mouth-filling, mouthwatering, tasty wine.

2021 Volnay
About 10 parcels assembled from all around the village – high and low
Hmm – more perfumed, more concentrated aroma too. A bit more structure but here is a wine of delicious flavour – wait a year or two until all is in place. The tannin is present but with no grain. Yum.

2021 Volnay Grands Champs
On the limit of the grand cru part of grand champs
Wide, a more intense beam of fine red fruit. Structural but never hard, just interesting. More clarity of fruit and a bit more muscle. Again deliciously finishing.

2021 Pommard
Vaumuriens, Chanlins and Riottes.
A broad nose, it suggests a little gas. Hmm, I love the energy here but there’s concentration too – none of the acidity sticking out. Again a sense of tannin but without grain. Finishing very well. Lovely villages.

2021 Volnay 1er Mitans
The vines are sited behind the big red house that’s on your left-hand side before the old Chapelle – direction Meursault. Old vines usually bring 3 barrels but this year 1.5
More clarity, slightly airy, an impression of extra depth too – a fine Volnay nose. Clarity again, and perfumed delicious fruit. That’s an absolute beauty – really excellent wine! The epitome of Volnay elegance!
