Geoffroy on 2022:
I’m happy with this quantity and the quality looks good, charming and balanced.

Geoffroy on 2021:
It’s the lowest volume I ever made, including the hailed years of 12-14. Actually wasn’t that bad in Beaune but it’s still less than in 2016 as in that year I had two parcels with no frost. We have about 1/3rd of a normal harvest volume – and, of course, it’s worse in the white – I normally have 20 barrels and I’ve 3! But all are now bottled – since mid-November – so just 2 weeks in bottle. It was a supple vintage I don’t think that it really needed to be kept longer in barrel. None of the crus were assembled despite the low volumes. In the vines I double-pruned – the definitive (final) pruning in March trying to avoid the worst of the frost. It’s a fresher, more stylish vintage than recently with lots of finesse. In 21 all was destemmed – in 22 there was 25% stems included in the ferments…

The wines…

A great tasting – one of my top visits for 2021s!

All bottled and since 2018 all the corks are NDTec:

2021 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er La Bataillière Aux Vergelesses
Sited in Savigny’s Les Vergelesses. One-third of this mid-slope 1.8-hectare monopole, 0.6ha, has been uprooted and planted with chardonnay. ‘5 barrels from 1.2 ha!’
A little oak spice but also a nicely attractive red fruit. Supple, silky, yes the oak is here but it’s so delicious I really don’t care. Broad finishing but with fresh, slightly floral accents. Yum – so good!

2021 Beaune 1er, Cents Vignes
More clay and silt here at the bottom of the slope, vines planted in 1962.
So wide and classy – this nose is almost silky. Ooh – yes – a wine of fluidity and energy, a faint tannin at its base is almost additive – the floral-infused flavours offer just a glimpse of oak in the finish. That’s really a fabulous Beaune – Bravo!
2021 Beaune 1er Toussaints
There are not many who label this.
If the Cent Vignes is about the florals, this is a wine that focuses on fine pure red fruit aromas. Equally fluid, but more mineral in style. There’s freshness of course. But fine, successive, waves of finishing flavour lap over the tongue. Hmm – that’s another great wine – also with a modest glimpse of the barrel only in the finish…

2021 Beaune 1er Les Aigrots
Near the Clos des Mouches, 1 ha of vines, 1/3 of which are planted to white – there’s more limestone and sand here.
A more vertical nose – underpinned with a minerality but the top notes are purely floral – beautiful! Gorgeous over the palate – just a little more cushion but it’s marginal – higher toned flavours that are just so moreish – vibrant finishing – beautiful, excellent wine!

2021 Beaune 1er Grèves
Here the nose is fresh but more compact – less effusive – just 2 barrels, both new. Beautiful again in the mouth – you sense the tannin – perhaps a bit more wood than grape – which is not so bad as it will fade to practically nothing within 12 months. Broad, floral, moreishly flavoured and less actual barrel flavour than some of the previous. This will be top wine – it’s just so balanced!

2021 Beaune 1er Teurons
From higher up in the vineyard.
This nose is somewhat intermediate to the Greves and the others – not fully open but some width of red fruit. Yes again – so supple and fluid. The structure is a little more for this one but insufficient to deter me from drinking a glass of this evening 😉 Yum!

2021 Beaune 1er Marconnets
Right at the top of the hill of Beaune. Lots of young vines were planted in 2013.
Super floral with another good base of minerality. Wider with a mm or two of extra depth to the texture. Another wine that’s just too delicious for its age – but with an exquisite balance that will easily take it to its 20th birthday and beyond… Bravo! The last impression a chalky tannin on the tip of my tongue.

2021 Beaune 1er Bressandes
From above Toussaints, there’s more limestone in this plot.
Deep and focused mineral aromatics with plenty of clarity of red fruit – not so wide in this case. Fine breadth of flavour – and it goes so deep – never to excess but more overt depth of fruit than most. The cool fruited floral style of the domaine in evidence here too only with a little extra depth. More stony finishing – cherry-stone in style. Another beautiful wine…
