Jean-Charles on 2021:
“In 2021 I’ve 17,000 bottles vs 45,000 in 2022 – so it’s about 1/3rd of a normal vintage here. The whites are almost all sold out, already! The reds are not too far behind. Our Aligoté was bottled in April, the rest of the whites before harvest then the reds from the end of October onwards. I’m very happy with the wines, they are nicely approachable.”
The wines…:
Classy wines that are true to their appellations – JC Fagot knows how to cook – not just in the kitchen!
All DIAM seals this year except a couple of reds:
2021 Bourgogne Aligoté
‘From old vines of 50 years-old from ‘Corpeau-Montrachet‘ – I think it’s great soil for Bourgogne’
An open, slightly direct, steely, plenty of acidity, juicy finishing wine. It’s long too with a little finishing floral lift. I’d give this a year or two in the cellar to fill out but it’s pure and clean!
2021 Bourgogne Chardonnay Les Louères
Near Puligny, almost a hectare
Calmer, broader, a little more generous aromatics. Larger scale, energetic wine – holding with very fine energy and perfumed flowers – like the last but different flowers. Yum!
2021 Bourgogne Chardonnay Les Champs Huillier
Vines nearer Chassagne, the last closer to Puligny, vines a little older.
More depth to this aroma, faintly from the barrel. Supple, mouth-filling wine with a little more flesh and a hint of salinity. The barrel visible but not distracting.
From near Rochepot
The best perfume – open, fresh, sherbet-style top notes with florals – yes! A wine of scale and structure – really super. The finish, slowly, persistently, mouth-watering – that’s a great Bourgogne!
2021 Rully
From 2 parcels
A more vertical nose – of both fine high and low tones, faintly padded. Broad mouth-watering, easy finishing – such a comfortable and tasty wine. That’s lovely!
2021 St.Romain
That’s more floral perfumed. I love the shape of this, structured with cool fruit – slowly growing in intensity and vibrancy that pushes nicely long into the finish. Lovely finish! Keep 2 years before opening.
2021 St.Aubin 1er Cru
From Sur Gamay and Frionnes – both small, so assembled.
Fine width, plenty of high tones – a proper invitation. Mouth-filling, fine scale, less overt structure but still enough. Rolling flavour with fine finishing presence – that’s a super finale!
2021 Puligny-Montrachet
One parcel
A little less scale but very fine aromatics – this is very lovely. Direct but still with width, more stony depth almost chalky in the finish. Proper Puligny with tension – like all – give them another year or two before attacking!
2021 Chassagne-Montrachet
A little more relaxed width to this nose – a hint more generosity. In the mouth too – there’s scale, just a mm or two of cushion, with a faint extra sucrosity mingled with perfume. Yum!
Les Reds:
Some reds will be better chilled in the summer but still won’t lack precision and perfumed clean fruit. Though never forget they are only a month in bottle:
2021 Bourgogne Côte d’Or Les Meix Grapins
Broad, vibrant, pretty red fruit. Ooh, that’s super – it’s fresh and energetic but the red fruit offers comfort, rounding the edges, offering a small sucrosity to the red berries. Finishing with aplomb. Simply excellent Bourgogne!
2021 Monthelie
Fruit that’s a little darker, but with super clarity and precision. Direct, incisive, the acidity to the fore but not quite straining the palate. Good finishing weight – a step up vs the Bourgogne.
2021 Auxey-Duresses
Lovely, pretty red fruits – almost boiled sweets. Mouth-filling, more energy and clarity than the Monthelie – the boiled sweets impression of the nose can be seen in the flavours too. Deliciously perfumed fruit in the finish. This will be an excellent wine!
Ooh – extra depth and extra perfume – that’s a great nose! MOutgh-filling, modestly structured but no grain to this tannin. Darker finishing fruit and super energy. Potentially a great villages – it’s already excellent!
2021 Santenay 1er Gravieres
Lots of aromatic breadth, here with an extra graphite minerality. Lots of intensity, the tannin silkier, a wine that’s direct but perfumed – again darker fruit. Love the finishing energy and complexity – like many, wait 2-3 years…
2021 Volnay
Broad, open and perfumed – darker-red fruit again. The last was direct, this has width but both are similarly intense. Detail and precision – keep patient. Super!
2021 Pommard Les Cras
A nose with extra depth and here width – the higher tones more guarded. Mouth-filling, silky wine. Some graphite minerality and a modest rigour in the finishing structure but here is plenty of wine – full flavoured, fresh and precise. Hold for 3-5 years. Lovely again!
