Claudie on 2019:
Frost in Rully. Then flowering was the worst for as it lasted so long, then the dryness brought small grapes with no juice. So all-in-all, about 60% down in volume!

Claudie on 2018:
2018 was much better! We start harvesting with reds 02 September, finishing with the reds of Rully. It’s not so practical to do the whites in the middle of the reds but that was what was needed – Wines that mainly came in between 13.1° and 14° but one was 14.5°.

The wines

Super reds and excellent whites for Claudie in 2018 – some really attractive wines here!

2018 Claudie Jobard, Rully Montagne La Folie (Blanc)
From a 2.45-hectare plot of 45-year-old vines. Will be bottled in a month. All barrel elevage, 15% new. Blocked a small amount of malo – only 10%. Lots of stones, worked organically – started an official conversion to organic in 2019 – the vines in the direction of Chagny.
Very aromatic – that’s a nice invitation. Supple, easy, but delicious. A light, attractive citrus behind. I like the finish here. Delicious easy wine.

2018 Rully En Villerange Blanc
Direction Mercurey, this a barrel sample – was racked into older barrels. Same age of vines and exposure to the sun as the last but completely different.
A more vibrant, more mineral nose. Ooh – more concentrated, more drive, more mouth-watering with intensity – this is a wine that begs more attention. Great finishing – Excellent!

Les Rouges:

2018 Bourgogne Milliane
One racking back into barrels, really Côte d’Or – near Pommard, old 60-80 vines but forgot to declare as Côte d’Or!
Nice colour. Deep, freshness, almost an anticipation of grain from tannin, faintly floral. Ooh, silky, slowly growing a tannin, but this is lovely, great Bourgogne of fine energy and depth of airy and deep flavour. Long, perfumed finishing with plenty of weight. Bravo!

2018 Rully La Chaume
Will be bottled next week, this sample taken from tank.
Nice colour. The nose is a little narrower but has a lovely depth. Higher tones here too – an airier top note. More driving less wide style but the energy is fine – perhaps a faint reduction in the middle. Certainly, a little tannin to relax. Super mouth-watering finish.

2018 Pommard Vaumauriens
Almost a silkiness to this wide and attractive nose. Lots of freshness, here, quite some elegance for Pommard, long, easy, fine, elegant and airy. That’s really not a standard 2018 – super in this elegant style. Bravo!
2018 Pommard 1er Les Charmots
100 year old vines. Always avoided doing some replanting here, but it’s not easy says Claudie – we did 9 hl/ha in 2019. Repicage hardly works as there’s not enough soil. Often (since 2016) some wc here but the stems were a little too green in this vintage, so none.
Hmm – not a loud nose, but deep and at the same time elegantly floral – it hides something with suggestion – but certainly says ‘drink me.’ Round, gorgeously textured, faintly grained, more a suggestion than a delivery of astringence. Wide and contemplative complexity in the middle and finishing flavours – though still with freshness. Simply beautiful…

2018 Beaune 1er Epenottes
Vinified in a new wooden tank so decided afterwards not to use new barrels.
Lots of colour here! A wider, darker fruited, fresh nose, slowly – like the others – starting to release some more floral aspects. Open, plenty of concentration, darker fruit, almost a twist of licorice. Slow waves of finishing flavour. Less sophisticated texture vs the Charmots but a broader scale of wine – perhaps less long too. Fine Beaune all the same!
