Jerome on 2019:
A very great year I think. The vintage was easy from the perspective of no maladies and it was easy to work in the vines but coulure and the dryness cut the volumes – the grapes were not so big. So in 19 I’m selling some barrels as I don’t have the wine to fill them. I’ve 5-50% losses depending on the parcels. But they are luminous wines, coloured, concentrated and they should be great.

Jerome on 2018:
A year that’s also a great one, and there have been a few since 2011. I think it classic despite the sun – there’s depth and energy, plus just a bit more class than 2017. A season that began with almost permanent rain until June – exactly as the flowering started – so we had perfect flowering weather, and all was done in 5 days. Water is the factor ‘x’ in the vintage; too much and there are maladies, too little and there’s a big lack of wine. It was certainly a vintage for green harvesting though I think those that didn’t had more fermentation problems. I actually thought about using some whole-clusters for the first time, but in the end, didn’t, as I thought I might then have to acidify! My grand crus came out between 13.1° and 13.7°

The wines…

What a super set of wines from Jerome. Plenty of freshness in these expressive wines – some are great – the Clos St.Denis is one of my wines of the vintage!

2018 Bourgogne Passetoutgrains
30% gamay
A lovely, bright, wide, glossy nose. Fresh, driving, delicious flavour, super-finishing. Bravo PTG!

2018 Côteaux Bourguignone
All pinot, planted opposite the previous vines
A wider, deeper nose – it’s very inviting. Bright, super energetic, direct, wider than the last. Really moreish

2018 Gevrey-Chambertin
From Les Seuvrées
A little extra higher-toned aroma, hinting at florals. Hmm, brilliant drive and freshness, long. Then slow waves of finishing flavour.

2018 Chambolle-Musigny
Vines from 1921 in Aux Echanges, but only the villages part. 13.2°
Deep, dark, nothing out of place, but tight in the high tones. Very wide, lovely freshness, ooh that has a gorgeously melting middle flavour. This is a dark and delicious wine. One of the better Chambolles of the vintage.

2018 Morey St.Denis 1er Au Chezeaux
A higher-toned nose, there’s some spice here. Ooh (again) driving freshness, this is great wine bravo!
2018 Charmes-Chambertin
Ooh, thats fabulously perfumed, driving, a little mineral, long. Thats also a great wine. There’s super energy here that expresses the wine brilliantly.

2018 Clos de la Roche
A good freshness but more serious depth of aroma – this needs to open. Driving, mineral perhaps faintly reductive, but with beautifully layered flavour and fine texture. Wide, chalky finishing. A serious but also seriously impressive wine.

2018 Clos St.Denis
That’s a big bouquet of flowers – wow, what a nose! Supple, generous, but nothing overdone, a little mineral, a lot complex – one of my wines of the vintage. Magic!

2018 Clos de Vougeot
In Grands Maupertuis
Fine depth of aroma, with almost a hint of coffee. Of course freshness, but this has a very classy texture, wide, this has nothing austere, long, slightly darker fruit. Excellent, at least…
