Léa on 2023:
“I’m tired – my little boy! 2023 was a good time but two years with some volume also means that we lack wood on the vines for doing our pruning – I’m not sure where the grapes will come from this year. I moved from 15 to 25k bottles to commercialise this year. I’m only using natural yeast and not all are finished fermenting but almost – the biggest problem is finding enough empty tanks to do my rackings at the moment – but it’s not a bad problem to have.”

Léa on 2022:
“2022 was also very good for us. I didn’t lose so much in 2021 because I was late pruning – but in 2022 I escaped the frost only by about 2 days!”

The wines…

I think the two cuvées of Chablis need cuvée names but as always tasty, indeed delicious wines chez Léa…

Wines bottled at the start of June – bottled with DIAM-style closures:

2022 Petit Chablis
There’s a nice freshness and suggestion of roundness here. Good, scale – growing from the core slowly filling the mouth with good complexity and a little extra citrus bitters. Delicious.

2022 Chablis
for French market – ‘There are two cuvées at this time but it’s too early for them to have different cuvée names as I’m not yet set on the blend of parcels.’
A nose that’s quite linear but still with a little width. In the mouth too – linear and mineral. A narrow wine right through to the finish but with super, small complexities of citrus – quite long. A wine of discretion that is still delightfully complex – one might say elegant.

2022 Chablis
For export
The nose here has more volume – still airy but much more open. More incisive and wider – there also seems more concentration here – it’s a more generous wine – layered and with good energy. That’s a lovely wine. But a wine of power and energy rather than the elegance of the first cuvée. – you takes your pick…
