On 2023:
“We just started doing some racking for some early bottlings of PC, maybe some Chablis too – it’s a sunny vintage but it looks nice – less proteins in the 2023s vs 2022. But quite different in style despite similar analytics.”
On 2022:
“A correct volume maybe a bit less than correct in some places – we had a lot of dryness here. We did had some frost and even a bit of snow on top of the Côte de Lecehets – we worried it could be like 2021 but it was much less in the end. Very clean grapes – so much easier than in 2021. The wines ranged from 12-12.5° for the Petit Chablis up to 13° for 1ers – analyses suggested that we should do a lot of acidification but we chose to do none and are very happy with that choice.”
The wines…
What a wonderful range of wines in 2022. I may not have picked out a bunch of great wines – but practically everything is excellent and delicious!
From 2022 all the wines will be DIAM (except for some screw-caps to order)… The principal reason for moving all to diam is not corked wines, ‘rather it is to open a bottle and have the same wine.’ Screwcap is also available for the Petit Chablis:
2022 Domaine Daniel Dampt, Petit Chablis
In Fyé near (above) 1er Berdiot. A combination of older and younger vines. Personalised Screw-cap – looks nice – and is by order depending on the market.
Depth of aroma – less width today. Lovely energy in the mouth – bright, vibrant – super finishing – a nose short of being simply excellent today – and I’m sure it will be excellent!
2022 Domaine Sébastien Dampt, Petit Chablis
This from Milly – 0.35 ha, 10+ year-old vines – a road between this and Villages Chablis, also close to the 1er crus…
More open and with a nicely vibrant yellow citrus note. Supple but still with intensity and structure – lovely middle flavour – a hint less intense finishing – but only a hint. Overall excellent !
2022 Domaine Vincent Dampt, Petit Chablis
Grapes in Fyé here with some from Troismes in Biene – 350-litre barrels used too.
A more elegant width of aroma here. Nicely structured. Full but with melting fresh flavour – almost some lime fruit and zest. Love that!
2022 Domaine Daniel Dampt, Chablis
Assembly of parcels, 80% for Milly, plus Beine and Fontenay.
A small softness to this aroma, more elegant florals and citrus – a lovely invitation. Ooh – mouth-filling with energy and delicious flavour – vibrant finishing with some salinity too. Beautiful Chablis
2022 Domaine Sebastien Dampt, Chablis
Vieux Voie is the principle location. 6 parcels included in this though, now with some newer vines in Fontenay.
Fresh, more mineral and saline nose. Lovely shape and structure, melting with delicious flavour – very Chablis without overdoing the minerality – a delicious finish. Excellent wine.
2022 Domaine Vincent Dampt, Chablis
All Milly again – 50% from a single parcel of just over 2 ha.
Some higher, more floral invitation from this. A hit of gas but with clarity and a beautiful blend of citrus and minerality – fine and saline intensity in the finish. That also excellent – potentially even better – wait 1-2 years for all of these!
2022 Domaine Daniel Dampt, Chablis 1er Beauroy
0.5 ha, in the climat of Beauroy, just behind the Côte de Lechet, the soil has a very fine white clay that’s hard to work. Sometimes less acidity here but high ripeness – can be an opulent place.
Even a little higher toned energy and florals. More concentrated but still with sweeping, delicious flavours. A simply super intensity of finishing flavour here – that’s so good !!
2022 Daniel Dampt Chablis 1er Fourchaume
4 parcels, 1 from Vaupulent
Hmm an extra ripeness to this fruit but still with energy. Large in the mouth, quite supple, Large in scale – more mineral scale – in this finish. A gorgeous finish!
2022 Domaine Daniel Dampt, Chablis 1er Vaillons
4 ha, 60% Lys, 25% Chatains, the rest from Sechets. Vines older than 40.
Ultra clarity from this beautiful nose. Ripe but not exotic, a fine narrowing intensity in the finish. This is another simply delicious wine!
2022 Sébastien Dampt, Chablis 1er Les Vaillons
60-year-old vines in Beugnons in stainless-steel – 1 hectare.
A lovely airy top note to this nose. Large, modestly generous but still with a fizzing, balancing energy. Such a drinkable, delicious wine. Intense finishing too.
2022 Domaine Vincent Dampt, Chablis 1er Vaillons
A mix of 2005 and 2011 vines, the largest part from Beugnons but this was also one of the most severely frosted parts.
A lovely nose more floral perfumed in this case. More gas but full of bubbling energy and a sneaky extra depth of flavour, a concentration. I’d wait a bit longer for this to possibly open wider still. Lovely wine.
2018 Domaine Daniel Dampt, Chablis 1er Les Lys
From the oldest parcel of vines in Les Lys – and the only one exposed north, made separately since 2001. 60-year-old vines directly on the hill above the winery. A part goes into his Vaillons, this is the ‘pure Lys’
Wide, nicely vibrant, citrus almost tending to golden but only modestly – still a fine freshness. Direct, mineral, super texture – for keeping – but more than excellent. Lovely salinity in this strong, mineral, finish too.
Wax-topped bottles whose elevage was in a concrete ‘egg-shaped’ tank (since 2013) with built-in thermo-regulation – ‘It’s ‘raw’ concrete so there’s some oxygenation.’ 2013 was the first vintage vinified like this.
Beautiful perfume, a bit more reducto-mineral but very subtle. Nice volume in the mouth, silky, concentrated but with exquisite balance with the energy. This is just sooo good. Drink now or wait 10 years – no problem! Bravo!
2022 Domaine Daniel Dampt, Chablis 1er Les Lys
The first sniff is fine the second has wow depth and minerality – you have to persevere with wine 😊 Open, a certainly fluidity to this flavour and great finishing intensity, almost a zestiness. Beautiful wine!
2022 Domaine Daniel Dampt, Chablis 1er Cote de Lechet
About 45-years-old on average, an assembly of 4 parcels, one large parcel running right from the bottom to the top. South, south-west facing, usually riper here. ‘Here was some frost and it made a difference despite some late pruning…’
Hmm that’s got a very fine almost acidulated fruit. Supple depth of flavour here, a more pronounced minerality but not a bit strict. Back to a much more saline finish note. Delicious wine.
2022 Domaine Sebastien Dampt, Chablis 1er Cote de Lechet
50 yo vines, a parcel of vines from bottom to top – Normally it’s the top of this parcel that will frost – in 21 it was the bottom.
Like the parcels – from bottom to top – this has quite an attractive and vertical nose. Lots of gas still in this. A fizzy, juicy, delicious wine but I’d certainly carafe it today – the team here would wait 10 years.
2022 Domaine Vincent Dampt, Chablis 1er Cote de Lechet
“The historic 1er of Milly.” 0.80 ha, 1964-68 planting dates. Just one parcel due to some replanting – so ‘only old-vines.’
Extra width from this blend of old vines and a parcel with their first harvesting – a super nose. Juicy, exiting, delicious flavours. And a fine finishing intensity and persistence too! Yes!
2022 Maison Dampt Chablis Bougros
Start the fermentation in tank, and after a period they finish that fermentation and the malo in barrel – but the last of the elevage is again in stainless steel.
A tighter nose of more concentration at the core – subtly oaked. Hmm, despite the obvious barrel here is alsoan obvious extra depth of complex flavour – ultra concentrated, accented by salinity in this finish – very, very slowly finishing. Potentially a great one here – not fluid but more than enough energy for fine balance!
