Eve on 2023:
We had a lot to do working organically – we treated and treated – but eventually the mildew dried and what we could harvest was still good and quite clean afterwards. We started harvesting about the 7th September. 12-12.5° maximum 13° in 2023 so lower degrees than a similar volume in 2022. Given the pressure of maladies we thought we have a lot of problems but the hot end to the vintage helped a lot – we did a bunch of harvesting overnight and then cooling the grapes – not all the fermentations are done but we’ll accept that!

Eve on 2022:
Frost came again – all the normal buds were frosted but all the opposing buds were fertile and we recovered just about everything. Not the volume to have VCI but happy – about 45 hl/ha. The vintage has got a nice freshness and was also a vintage where the fermentations – some – were a little slower. That’s the local, natural, yeast for you – but a year with many fewer treatments and no real pressure from the maladies. Not all are bottled at this stage…

The wines…

I loved the 2021 wines here – it’s a very strong set of 2022s too – well done!

2022 Chablis
Usually from 13 hectares of vines. Bottled October.
Open top notes, fresh yellow citrus in the middle. Hmm – that’s a really tasty width of flavour, clean, and framed with a tiny grain of tannin too. Juicy finishing and delicious wine.

2022 Chablis 1er Troëmes
Also bottled in October.
Less impact more airy but still very inviting aromatics. Not larger in the mouth but a little more intensity and a lot more complexity – still juicy – but here is a wonderful middle and finishing flavour – super delicious – excellent wine!

2022 Chablis 1er Vaucoupin
‘For us, we find that this place always puts the terroir before the vintage.’ Bottled in December
A more vertical nose of higher florals and deeper minerality – modest width today. Hmm, more structured and wider – still with a super energy and delicious complexity – maybe keep this a year while drinking the Troëmes but this is also a super wine and finishing larger than that previous wine too.

2022 Chablis 1er Les Fourneaux
Some oak elevage partly in demi-muids.
A nose that’s a deep well of minerality, more than accented by the citrus fruit. Slowly opening with some floral top notes. More actively mineral but also you see a little of the barrel elevage too in these flavours. I’d wait maybe as much as 2 years for this flavour to fade but another juicy, wide, delicious wine – well done!

Sampled from tanks:

2022 Chablis ‘Part des Anges’
A parcel selection – always the same when made – opposite the domaine right next to the 1er cru. Not bottled.
Airy, clean nose. Direct, more mineral, beautifully vibrant and with small finishing – almost zesty tannin. The finish beautifully opens. A hint of floral and with fine minerality – it could be a great villages!

2022 Chablis Luness
A single parcel with ‘a good limestone soil’– with barrel elevage – 228s
You can see the barrels but also a freshness and pretty floral notes. Direct and silky, growing with saline notes – there’s super complexity here – the barrel flavours might take 2-3 years to decay but this is a really delicious wine.

2022 Chablis 1er Fourchaume
Airy but not that forward aromas today. A fizz of CO2 – but behind it is a wonderful clarity, minerality and a broad, ripe, but subtle, citrus note. Hmm, that’s a wonderful Fourchaume – bravo !!

2022 Chablis 1er Mont de Milieu
Hmm – that’s wider and has the impression of a little lime fruit – or perhaps it’s a small reduction! Supple, more composed after the Fourchaume but potentially more concentrated too – certainly a little more generous. Broad, mineral and also here, perhaps, a little lime-infection to the fruit. Long, more contemplative finishing. It’s a delicious wine.
