Laurence on 2023:
“I think everyone can be happy with last year – we have some wine! All the fermentations have gone with ease and we will be racking very soon.”
Laurence on 2022:
“2022 wasn’t an extraordinary volume – we did a small amount of VCI but it’s not a year of volumes like in 2018 – we are very happy as it’s also a lovely year. We had lovely weather – I think maybe only 4 treatments, possibly 4.5, were needed! It was hot but never too much. I think the wines have nice balance – less mineral to start that with than in 2021 but they have an easy style and still have some minerality”
The wines…
What a delicious range of 2022s!
Currently, it’s all ‘technical corks’ of Trescases just at the moment – there was a time with DIAM but then one cuvée had a problem and the bottler and DIAM were blaming each other and it was really difficult to get a resolution – so today it’s just Trescases… There are also plenty of screw-caps in use at this domaine too. ‘Both work well, it really depends on a particular market’s acceptance.’ This year, all the wines were already bottled.
2022 Petit Chablis
Sold out! So there was nothing to taste…
2022 Chablis
A smaller nose this morning but with an attractive floral note. Hmm – his is juicy and mouth-filling. Only a hint generous and finishes nicely – a wine of ease – yum!
2022 Chablis Vieilles Vignes
From Chaumes here in Maligny – planted by father – now a little more than 50 years old.
More open, more direct – freshness and attractive complexity – this is much more forward. Lots of volume here, with minerality at the base – there’s a width and concentration here that’s next level – the persistence of the finish too – that’s a super wine.
2022 Chablis Demoiselles
A single parcel selection – planted in 1986 – south-facing vines.
Almost as open as the VV but with more direct aromas – this has a slightly more (even more!) attractive nose. Hmm – much more fluid and melting over the palate – this minerality is more visible and beautifully textured, elegant even. That’s more than excellent – it’s a beauty!
2022 Chablis 1er Fourchaume
Hmm – that’s got a lovely nose – pretty yellow fruit. Wider, juicier and it’s got great clarity too. Ooh – that’s just so delicious and for me, today, a little less ‘2022’ and a little more ‘Fourchaume.’ Not a powerful wine, rather an elegant one but it’s really super!
2022 Chablis 1er Homme Mort
Bottled in September – most of the others were done in July.
More direct, more mineral – a less forgiving but more impressive nose. Much more direct and concentrated, the minerality on a much higher level. For this I would wait 2-3 years – 5 would be even better – but I would happily drink the Demoiselles and Fourchaume whilst waiting for it!
