Thomas on 2023:
“Ah, 2023 was nice – we never complain when the tanks are full! We have a few tanks that are slow in their fermentations but it’s not all of them.”
Thomas on 2022:
“We weren’t touched by the frost in 22 – there are years with volume and others without – the quality is good and maybe similar to 2023 – we will check that next year.”
The wines…
Like most of Chablis in 2022, it was hard to find great wines here – but what superb average quality – I loved so many of these wines!
A mix of already bottled wines and tank samples – described in the text. All apart from the Petit Chablis are DIAM, the PC having a different manufacturers seal – but similar style:
2022 Petit Chablis
Vines in Beines, Prehy and the plateau behind the Grand Crus – 8 months in stainless steel and a little enamel for elevage – ‘We have a big 9-hectare parcel, so we are looking for something easy to drink.’
A nice width of freshness – that’s a good invitation. A little roundness here but here are good dimensions of flavour. The finish is particularly tasty with a little orange in the the agrume – a super finish.
2022 Chablis
This is more open and showing extra fresh energy. Cool, mouth-filling – ooh really vibrant, saline, that’s a eally excellent Chablis – I love it!
2022 Chablis Paradis
Vines in Chichée. This a tank sample – a wine with some barrel elevage – more than in previous vintages.
A fuller nose. Larger – lots of scale and complexity to this wine – slightly spiced – almost a little Meursault-style ginger impression. A delicious wine.
2022 Chablis 1er Vosgros
Also sampled from tank. Just under 1 ha a mix of 2 parcels, one steep and south-facing, plus another small parcel in Vaugiraud. Vine ages between 5-30. ‘Like a Roman amphitheatre.’
Here the width of citrus aroma has a lovely vibrancy. This certainly has scale in the mouth – and an almost bubbling complexity of flavour – I don’t note any CO2 – finishing with extra intensity and even some small citrus bitters. Yum!
Back to bottled wine:
2022 Chablis 1er Vaillons
From Epinottes and Roncières and a tiny part of Lys – the latter a relatively small 0.16 ha from a total of 1 ha. Here a little longer elevage again.
A fine clarity of yellow citrus and energy – some forals too. Here is a small spritz of CO2 but it’s quickly gone. Energy, open, fine clarity – that’s really too delicious! What an excellent wine!
2022 Chablis 1er Montmains
3 sectors, but all Montmains, 3.85 hectares.
Plenty of colour but what a super nose – energy and minerality – so much interest, I find that super. Panoramic, cool, slightly saline – modest finishing tensity but nothing modest about the delicious flavour – a super finish – I love this wine too.
2022 Chablis 1er Mont de Milieu
0.69 hectares. Small parcels so one of the smallest cuvées here – Some barrel elevage but older barrels than for the Vosgros. Tank sample.
Hmm – both width and some aromatic concentration. I love this shape and flavour – clearly a ripeness of fruit but retaining lovely freshness. This is a really successful MdM – and not overtly like a wine from the Côte d’Or – unlike many in Chablis.
2022 Chablis 1er Vaugiraut
New here. 600-l barrels as some of the previous. 70% barrel elevage.
A more direct nose – the citrus vibration is strong in this one! In the mouth too – cool fruit and a vibrancy of more mineral style föavour – the citrus having an accent of lime in this case. That’s a lovely wine.
2022 Chablis 1er Les Lys
Just two weeks in bottle – like the last – but another open and vibrant nose – yellow citrus and white flowers. More CO2 here – but this fizzing energy is just so moreish. Deliciously cool and complex citrus flavours – I don’t think much about minerality today but this is super-delicious!! A last memory of slightly chalky texture – lovely.
