Marie-France on the recent vintages:
“We were lucky that we had a good harvest in 2020 so the sales of those wines are not quite finished yet, because it’s about a third of a normal harvest here in 2021. 2022 was back to a good volume one again; we had slight losses due to the frost and also in some sectors we were touched by hail – but we had clean grapes – we even stopped for a time during the harvest due some rain but fortunately no rot developed and the grapes remained nice and clean. Back to 2021 all the Chablis is sold, the Côteaux Bourguignone and the Petit Chablis too. ”
The wines…
A short tasting – as at a number of domaines this year – the 21s that were available were fresh, direct and classic.
DIAM for the whole range here.
2021 Côteaux Bourguignone
Vines that were in Chablis, on the plateau of Chemilly but are no longer as the delimitations were changed…
Hmm – that’s an inviting, fruity nose still with plenty of freshness. Good attack, a citrus acidity that spreads wide over the palate – a bit more sweetness would be even better but this is a juicy, tasty thing!
2021 Petit Chablis
Vines in Pouilly on the plateau, Chemilly, Fyé – ‘everywhere!’ Bottled Oct-Nov
Hmm – that’s a more mineral width of aroma with some extra ripeness to this citrus. Hmm – that’s lovely – broad, insistent, lots of citric energy. A fun wine but with really fine finishing minerality – it’s excellent!
2020 Chablis
Normally worth about 30 hectares. Vines planted by grandfather, mainly from the village of Chemilly, but there are vines in Chablis and Béru too. The 2021 may already be gone but 2020 is not yet done:
The classic 2020 nose of pine needles – pyrazines. Mouth-filling, beautiful shape and energy but the pyrazines are quite strong here – a style of 2011 developing, I’m sure! Not for me…
2021 Chablis 1er Montée de Tonnerre
O.75 ha. Planted 1947… on the hillside. Here it doesn’t frost so often as the vines are quite high. All hand-harvested – ‘It’s not easy as it’s steep here – but it’s good for the muscles of the harvesters!’ Still in tank and will probably stay there until the 2020 is finished but no for bottling before the spring, for sure.
Ooh – that’s got a lovely depth of vibrant, predominantly mineral aroma – lovely. A bead of gas. Direct, silky, of wiry muscle and minerality. A sweeping wine – simply excellent and completely classic.
