More reports for Roi Chambertin tastings
Welcome to the eleventh presentation by the Syndicat of Gevrey-Chambertin of new vintage – the first tasting was done for the 2010s – you will find notes from all of those previous tastings in the back-pages of Burgundy-Report (here). Due to the vagaries of covid there was no similar presentation of the 2019s. Last year the 2020s were presented in a different format and in a different tasting place – the cooperage of Tonnellerie Rousseau in the outskirts of Gevery-Chambertin. I visited but didn’t taste as it wasn’t set up to properly taste all the samples. This year for the presentation of the 2021s, it was also at the Rousseau cooperage and some of the functionality to taste more easily was restored – there were fewer samples on our table than previous vintages but it was still a tasting with lots of utility!
The wines:
2021 Lippe Boileau, Gevrey-Chambertin VV
Fresh airy attack. Supple, silky, wide – direct flavour – rather compact initial flavour but in the end, beautifully shaped.
2021 Pierre Bourée, Gevrey-Chambertin VV
Deeper aromas, plenty of stems. Sweetness of fruit and lots of flavour complexity – but wait a while for this, there is a hint of austerity – much as I like it!
2021 Alain Burguet, Gevrey-Chambertin Mes Favourites VV
A fresh and slightly herby width of aroma. Broad, some high toned oak in the middle – actually quite a lot. But lots of flavour complexity.
2021 Claude Dugat, Gevrey-Chambertin
Extra depth – a hint of reduction? Broad, yes reductive – very silky wine – lots of dimensions to this flavour – but not showing well today – the base wine seems very fine.
Ooh, that’s good – lots of wc like Bourée but much better contained and attractive today. Broad, mouth-filling wine, still silky – lots of character – yes!
2021 Philippe Rossignol, Gevrey-Chambertin
High-toned notes. Broad, complex but really high toned and a stylishly quite different.
2021 Taupenot-Merme, Gevrey-Chambertin
An easy width of red fruit aroma – quite inviting. Direct, cool fruit, growing wider and very mouth-watering. Right at the end with some florals. Good.
2021 Thierry Mortet, Gevrey-Chambertin
Higher toned more obvious red fruit. Airy, very red berry in style, faintly growing more tannic. But finishing very well.
Fresh and attractive. Broad – love the shape of this – stands out as excellent!
2021 Marchand-Grillot, Gevrey-Chambertin
Deeper, a little of the wc impression. Dark, complex a little reductive and herbal – maybe better with more air… but the finish is creamy and interesting.
2021 Marchand-Grillot, Gevrey-Chambertin Le Créot
Hmm that’s a much more interesting – broader and more complex. That sits very well on the palate – showing much better – that’s lovely wine, even with some finishing perfume.
High-toned, less wide but still attractive. More incisive and fresh, framed with a fine tannin – this is tasting very well – excellent
Width and some concentration to this nose – fresh interest. Super texture and fine depth of flavour – another simply excellent wine.
2021 Rossignol-Trapet, Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Etelois
Complex and a little herbal. Bg in the mouth – cool flavour, complex from the stems – this for keeping a little while but with lovely finishing perfume and flavour…
2021 Jerome Galeyrand, Gevrey-Chambertin La Justice
Ripe but with red fruit of clarity. Properly structured and fresh-flavoured. This is a very lovely wine.
2021 Domaine le Guellec-Ducouet, Gevrey-Chambertin Les Jeunes Rois
Creamy oak on this nose. The shape is good the texture is excellent, finshing with lots of high-toned oakiness – too much for me – I’d wait at least 5 years.
2021 Domaine le Guellec-Ducouet, Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Champs
More direct and less oak. Hmm, the shape and texture that I admire and this time the oak is on a much lower level – that’s rather good!
2021 Thierry-Mortet, Gevrey-Chambertin Vignes Belles
Nice freshness here – the same in the mouth – vibrant, direct and mouth-watering – still, a bit structured though – give it some time.
2021 Philippe Naddef, Gevrey-Chambertin En Songe
A slightly smoky width. Incisive, then broad-flavoured. This has lots of energy and some tannin that makes the texture more velvety.
2021 Pernot Père, Gevrey-Chambertin En Champs
Deeper, darker red fruit – still with good clarity and perfume. Energy, complexity – a bit more structure but that’s really a lovely wine – have some patience though…
2021 Sylvie Esmonin, Gevrey-Chambertin
A smoky width to this nose – attractive though. Plenty of structure again, tannin too but there’s also a ton of complexity – very nice!
2021 Sylvie Esmonin, Gevrey-Chambertin VV
This a little reductive. The flavours too. I really like the shape and texture of this but it’s not the time to taste.
2021 Charles Audin, Gevrey-Chambertin
Some coffee complexity in this width. Broad and fresh, framed with a grain of tannin but not too much dryness. Keep a while – the finish is a little barrel-smoky today…
2021 Henri Richard, Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Corvées
Such a big and attractive nose – clearly a bit volatile but really lovely. Mouth-filling. Great flavour – totally non-standard Gevrey today but despite that, it’s quite tasty. Still plenty for the elevage to sort out.
Vibrant and direct aromas – super. Energy, complexity – open and pure. Great finishing – yes!
2021 Château Philippe le Hardi, Gevery-Chambertin Champerrier du Dessus
A less forward nose but fine and with clarity. More gas here – the finish is good and there’s still clarity if a little herb this time
2021 Château Philippe le Hardi, Gevery-Chambertin 1er Au Closeau
Another fine and pure nose – lovely. Mouth-filling, faintly framed with tannin but melting fine flavour over the palate – this is lovely.
2021 Drouhin-Laroze, Gevrey-Chambertin Dix Climats
Airy, but the red fruit has a little cooked style to it. Sleek, incisive – good intensity here. I really like the finish with lots of depth of flavour!
2021 Tortochot, Gevrey-Chambertin Champerrier VV
Open and airy with faint herb. Slightly reductive. Broad and very tasty in the middle and finishing flavours. That’s a nice red fruit finish too.
2021 Pernot Père, Gevrey-Chambertin Les Jeunes Rois
A nicely direct and airy nose – attractive. Mouth-filling, lots of freshness. Really juicy finishing too. I really like this finish.
2021 Marc Roy, Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur
There’s a bit of reduction here. Fine mouth-filling shape – but rather reductive – the finish is a good one though.
2021 Rossignol-Trapet, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Clos Prieur
Stems but with perfume. Plenty of scale and plenty of tannin too. Juicy wine again.
2021 Thierry Mortet, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Clos Prieur
A perfumed, very airy width – that’s nice. Good shape in the mouth – there’s quite a lot of tannin here but very little dryness. Lovely finishing
2021 Marchand-Grillot, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Petit Chapelle
A deep nose, slightly reductive again. Mouth-filling, complex, maybe a bit volatile today…
2021 Philippe Rossignol, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Corbeaux
A broad but rather herbal nose today. Some sweetness and lots of energy in these flavours. The herby style is in the finishing flavours too.
2021 Chateau de Laborde, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Corbeaux
Hmm, this is direct and fresh – nicely perfumed too. Silky, broad, well structured. That’s another winner from this producer!
2021 Pierre Bourée, Gevrey-Chambertin Clos de la Justice
Very aromatic, more attractively so than the VV. Broad, structural, complex – stemmy but exciting too – a wine very much for keeping.
Pretty, precise, wc perfume. Fresh, dynamic wine wine – cool fruit and tons of energy with a small frame of tannin.
2021 Philippe Naddef, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cazetiers
Ooh – that’s a very attractive nose. Open, but with a modest fat, sweet fruit and good structure – this is very good.
2021 Bruno Clair, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cazetiers
There’s a bit more density to this nose but it’s also a bit less open. A little herb complexity in this impressively large-scaled wine. Great finishing today!
2021 Philippe Rossignol, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Estournelles
Another broad and quite herby nose – but with fine red clarity of fruit too. Broad, juicy, nice intensity and depth of flavour. Another very good wine from here.
2021 Pierre Bourée, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Les Champeaux
Smoky stems but this is the best, most perfumed, of all from this domaine, so far. Some gas but also fine red fruit in this slightly architectural wine. Finishing very well. That’s super!
2021 Berthaut-Gerbet, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Lavaux St.Jacques
Hmm – cushioned, absorbing – a super nose. Large of scale, fine of texture – still some modest tannic grain but complex and very lovely wine.
Lots of reduction – quite smoky too. Great shape, texture and volume in the mouth – beautifully flavoured, slightly cushioned. That will be super in 15 years…
2021 Taupenot-Merme, Charmes-Chambertin
Hmm – stems with finesse. A bit of structure here a more chiselled wine. Fine finishing flavour – very good!
2021 Tauopenot-Merme, Mazoyeres-Chambertin
Hmm – also stems with finesse – a little more to find here too. Fresh, direct, silky – that’s a sleek and lovely wine.
2021 Henri Richard, Mazoyeres-Chambertin
Lots of herbacity in this one – before calming with a more standard wc floral. Broad, fresh, and very attractive despite a frame of grainy tannin.
2021 Henri Richard, Charmes-Chambertin
A little finer and perfumed with more aromatic depth. Lots of energy and equal to that, lots of structural tannin too – grainy but not too drying – certainly a wine to keep in the cellar for 5-10 years.
Ooh – broad and very impressive in a strongly wc way – simply sumptuous aromas. Full, seamless wine – ooh that’s a great one!
2021 Philippe Naddef, Mazis-Chambertin
A narrower nose with some spicy components. Sleek, direct, cool fruit – some structure but very well balanced. A fuller wine and a very good one.
