Charlene on 2023:
“In the end we were happy – the summer was complicated with lots pressure from mildew – after the easy year of 2022. We had to triage some parcels but the result was good – and all the fermentations were done by Christmas. In the cuverie, at least, very easy after a few vintages where the fermentations were slower.”
Charlene on 2022:
“There were small effects from the frost but in the end they were minimal… It was a little wet for a couple of weeks in June but before and after it was fine and the grapes were nice and clean at harvest time – you could say it was the THE year without complications – despite a little stress when the frost was close. We started harvesting the 31st August with very clean grapes. It was a good harvest volume but not large. ”
The wines…
What a great result from this domaine – well done!
All the 1ers with cork after the first two DIAM:
From close to Maligny
A little toasty width here – the citrus slowly coming through. Wide but still incisive, saline – you could say classic – just beautifully mineral. Gorgeous!
2022 Chablis
Right bank below Mont de Milieu plus one other. About 50 years old vines on average. This the domaine wine – plain south facing
Broader and deeper, the citrus more direct. Just a much larger scale in the mouth – juicy, broad, the intensity here is next level – I love it and its saline accent – yes!
2022 Chablis Mademoiselle
This with some maceration in the pressoir and some old barrel elevage for a time before finishing elevage in tank.
An airy, calmer nose – almost textural – certainly perfumed. Rounder, more supple, more subtle too. There’s extra generosity and a faint barrel note as you head into the finish. Deep, broad extra-long finishing. I prefer the energy of the previous wines but this is a super engaging and ultra-long wine.
2022 Chablis 1er Vaillons
A whiff of citrus with an accent of barrel today. Yes – open, sinuous, love this texture and fluidity in the mouth, almost juicy. A simply excellent Vaillons – even a touch of aniseed here. But keep it 2-3 years so that the oak has gone.
2022 Chablis 1er Vaugiraut
A small parcel. South-facing, similar to the soil in Forêts. 25-year-old vines.
A blend of wide freshness and density to these aromas. Larger scale with more impact – saline, juicy – the usual descriptors! – but here all is harmony despite the more mineral presentation. The finish broad and involving – another simply excellent wine!
2022 Chablis 1er Forêt
The vines planted 1955/56, right at the start of Forêts – a very limestone soil.
A smaller impact but with more airy and beautiful perfume. Here is a riper citrus intensity – a more direct flavour – melting over the palate – three completely different styles – all excellent! This finish being the most vibrant of all.
Right at the end of Montmains (real Montmains) about 150 metres from the Fôrets but same height up on the hill. More white/blue clay, less white stone than Fôrets. This and the last the oldest parcels of the domaine at roughly 67 and 68 years-old.
Ooh – that’s the most gorgeous nose so far – deep, expressive – and mineral! Saline, direct, melting pure but cold rock over the palate – that’s simply a great wine – bravo – a dream wine – and with a finish that melts over the palate – even a little mandarin in this – yes!
Now moving to the right bank:
In Vaupoulot just changing the orientation a little, similar to that of the middle of Montée de Tonnerre.
Broad, golden-yellow citrus – very classic. Extra richness to the texture and shape yet remaining fluid and involving. A finish that fades ever-so slowly – that’s an other potentially great wine!
2022 Charlene et Laurent Pinson, Chablis 1er Montée de Tonnerre
This from bought grapes ‘it’s not that we need the volume, but I love to complete a nice range of crus’
Narrower more focused, deep too – that’s a beautiful nose! Really wide, tons of mouth-filling volume here. The extra concentration is apparent as you get closer tot the grand crus! Yum!
2022 Chablis 1er Mont de Milieu
Biggest parcel of the domaine, 4.5 hectares in two blocks, ‘the big parcel works really well raisonné because there is no neighbourly influence. Always the first harvested area – the acidities drop sooner here.
More airy, precise and involving – what an invitation -some hints of florals too! Denisty and fluidity – the perfect balance for this impressive wine – layered finishing flavours of generosity but also balance. A more considered contemplative finish but with lots of flavour – What a super wine.
The final assembly of the grand crus is already done but they won’t be bottled for a couple of weeks:
2022 Chablis Les Preuses
A contract. Sample from tank
Here is much floral perfume – a wine with aromatic concentration. Incisive, beautifully textural, obviously saline – a little oak coming into the discussion in the finishing flavours – so wait 3+ years, better 5+ – but this is excuisite! What a breadth of finishing flavour too – class!
From 4 different parcels, but the total is 2.5 hectares. Various vine ages from 10-47 years. Also a sample
This is really expressive today – more white flower complexity vs the density of aroma in the Preuses. Hmm, gorgeous. What this offers that the Preuses doesn’t (today) is an extra fluidity – wow that’s so good. Great wine – and wait again for the barrel to fade. Fabulous!
After two years of barrel elevage – This is the one wine that is waiting for a September bottling.
The oak is on a higher level here – there’s aromatic freshness but mainly oak spice today. In the mouth, however, wow! So melting with cool, mobile, mineral flavour. Is this peak Chablis? Undoubtedly great but you should have an 8-10 year timescale for drinking !!
