David on 2015:
“2015 – the expectations are easy – high! Potentially the very best vintage I’ve seen for pinots, but I’m always suspicious of sunny vintages. Of-course there was the drought, but we fortunately got rain when we needed it. There is certainly more freshness in the wines than in 2009 for instance. Let’s see…”
The wines…
Really a lovely supple, often sumptuous set of wines here.
Ooh – what a lovely round, open and super nose. Relatively big in the mouth for a bourgogne, some tannin, but really top class bourgogne here.
From 50 year-old vines.
A beautiful aromatic with some florals. Round and with super acidity but softly textured with plenty of tannin though hardly any grain. Also a beauty.
A blend of fruit from two parcels; Grand Champs and the villages portion (the bottom) of Les Lurets.
Beautiful, just a perfectly cliché Volnay aroma – super engaging. Much more present tannin, but lovely more complex mid-palate.
A pure fruit, edged with flowers, not violets, not roses, something in-between. Round, textured, a lovely. lovely wine. No more words required…
2014 Vosne-Romanée
From Les Chalondes
Spicy, both the wine itself and a little barrel plus 40% whole cluster. More structured, the fruit mainly shining through from the mid-palate onwards, very tasty finishing indeed.
For the second consecutive vintage, a blend of Cras and Les Avaux due to hail. Only 4hl from Cras.
Crystal red fruit – gorgeous. Perfect texture, just a hint of tannic drag, complex and appealing. Bravo!
2014 Santenay 1er Clos Rousseau
A lovely width of bright red fruit and florality. Lovely texture too to augment the fine deep and complex flavour. A long finish with more herb-like flavours. Splendid.
2014 Volnay 1er Les Lurets
A small 1er from where Champans and Caillerets meet.
High toned, complex and lovely. Quite open. Big in the mouth, really intense textured fruit. A little tight vs some vintages, but everything is here.
2014 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Lavaux St.Jacques
Perfumed whole clusters, roses, actually showing very friendly for Lavaux today. Elegant wine and completely seductive already!
2014 Corton Clos du Roi
Opulent aroma, still with some faint vanilla. Round, nicely textured, but more direct too, a line into the finish. A burst of finishing flavour..
2014 Clos de la Roche
Deep, dark, bass note. Big in the mouth, wide too. There’s some salt-edged tannin, and a concentrated if tight overall personality. Very poised/balanced.
Les Blancs…
2014 Bourgogne Chardonnay
Already bottled
Nicely fresh aroma, good attack. Ripe, round and with good direction.
2014 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Tête du Clos
Wide, fresh faintly honied, perhaps cream too. Cushioned texture, lovely in the mid palate, perhaps with some root ginger,
2014 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Les Vergers
More floral with citrus agrume. A more padded texture, again salty tannin. Very fine and persistent in the finish – lovely.
Really not the most powerful aromatic but seemingly the largest. Despite its freshness there’s a little honey here. Lovely texture; quite plush, in the middle almost short on acidity, but super in the mid-palate to finish. Certainly a contemplative wine, but I’m sure a great one.
