Carel on 2015:
“The white quantities were good, the reds not. Total yields were 30 hl/ha for the domaine, but the whites contributed 44 of that! No sugar was needed, and not much sulfur was added either. Harvest started early for whites, many with whole cluster pressing – champagne style. Nothing special to do… Mainly it was the removal of verjus and leafs for the sorting.”

Carel on 2014:
“2014 had more extremes in the growing season; the early dry start was probably more challenging than the dryness in 2015. More sorting was required, for volatile acidity too. The balance of the wines is good, their ripeness is okay, and the phenolics et-cetera are better than in 2013, though often with lower sugars. Very little whole-cluster was used for these 2014s because of the low sugars – which I didn’t want to exacerbate. On the positive side, our Biodynamics mean less vigour, but also less botrytis.”

The wines…

Just a few bottled so far. Mainly the reds were tasted from barrel. There was some variability today; some wines showing perfectly, some more reductive or needing to complete more elevage. Still, it looks like a very good range from this, possibly, the largest biodynamic estate in Burgundy…

2014 Bourgogne Rouge
Just one parcel from other side of the road to the Clos des Langres.
A narrow but attractive fresh medium red fruited nose. More friendly than the nose initially suggests with a lovely texture, and a flavour that rolls nicely over the tongue. Intense but supple. A lovely start. But be patient – wait at least 6 months.

2014 Côte de Beaune Villages
From Ladoix Combottes.
Deeper colour. The nose is a little more intense version of the Bourgogne. More muscle, but nothing austere, a more intense line of flavour. Richer and more intense with darker red fruit in the finish – yum!

2014 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Aux Clous
A bright top layer, deep darker fruit below. Hint of gas but good texture with a little richness of extract. Lots of width in the finish, complex and really rather tasty…

2014 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Les Peuillets
Tighter but deep and interesting. Wiry, but concentrated. Good flavour complexity. To wait for but will be super. Lovely finish.

2014 Pommard Les Lambots
High tones with faint herbs over a darker base. Lithe and direct, a core of structure but very good mouth-watering flavour that grows from the core. Lovely and floral finishing – there’s excellent potential here. Yum

2014 Pommard 1er Fremiers
Width of aroma, faint volatility. Leaner, more direct, super floral fruit finishing, but clearly needs more elevage.

2014 Volnay 1er Fremiets
Rounder, faintly floral nose. Rounder in the mouth too. A faint tannin. Then it bursts with mid-palate and finishing flavour these Volnays and Pommards are very much backend loaded today!

2014 Ladoix 1er Basses Murottes
Big, deep red fruit. Some structure here, but really a lovely supple fruit and attendant complexity. A certain richness of flavour here. Excellent wine with super persistence…

2014 Aloxe-Corton
From 3 parcels
A width of good fruit notes. Less directly sweet but wider with a more pertinent structure. Here the tannin currently shows some dryness, but a couple of years in the bottle and you wont notice as its very fine textured. A bright burst of lovely red fruit in the finish – tasty wine…

2014 Aloxe-Corton 1er Les Chaillots
Almost 1 hectare of vines.
A super nose – almost a triangle with bright floral fruit at the top over a wide base of deeper fruit. Larger, more supple structure, complex and involving mid-palate flavour, super wine. Excellent!

2014 Côte de Nuits Villages Clos des Langres
Deep colour. Bright darker shaded fruit. Impressively silky, with a weight of dark fruit. Fine balance too. It’s a line of dark flavour in the finish too. Less complex, but super none the less.

2014 Nuits St.Georges
From 2 parcels; Argillas plus Herbues.
Deep and dark, faintly reduced. Super texture and a width of flavour, again a hint reduced – time to rack, but a good finishing flavour that’s edged with salnity…

2014 Gevrey-Chambertin
From 6 separate parcels.
This smells lovely – open, inviting and with a good complexity. A large circle of rich, involving flavour, slowly melting like a ball of ice-cream on your palate. Lovely finishing width and complexity. Really yum!

2014 Vosne-Romanée 1er Les Chaumes
Not so deep, but a very pretty and wide floral-inflected fruit. A little gas here, but the palate is wide, supple and slowly ingrains the flavour. Contemplative but very tasty. Last drops on the glass are super…

2014 Corton Pougets
Reduced, sulfured last week. But broad, round and impressively shaped.

2014 Corton Les Hautes Murottes
Deep colour. Rather tight nosed. Intense, brooding, fresh with a little minerality, big, broad, indeed round finishing with a lingering line of flavour. This will need time but the persistence and overall shape are first class..

2014 Corton Renardes
A good aromatic width. A little give and easiness to the texture but here is a brilliantly wide complexity of flavour. Excellent. A little less focused today, but brilliant none the less.
2014 Corton Clos du Roi
More aromatic depth with a tighter fresher note above. Super direct but silky and with a growing, indeed ever-growing, complexity. Ping goes the extra flavour im the finish – really super.

2014 Clos de Vougeot
A discreet nose. Big round complex, vivant. As usual, a really great CV here, with lots of fresh, complex flavour that goes all the way into the finish. A broadly shaped flavour. Very, very good!

Les blancs…
These are mainly now finishing their elevage in stainless-steel.

2014 Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Beaune Les Perrières
Already in bottle. One parcel, just above Savigny.
Fresh, a little citrus. Some gas, round but with plenty of balanced complexity. Fine texture. Very good wine, just a hint saline in the finish.

2014 Savigny-Lès-Beaune Clos des Godeaux
A bright central core of aroma over a tighter, almost macerating lemon fruit. More mineral, fresh cool fruit, but with a lovely energy. Fine flavour here – im liking this very much, lovely weight of good finishing flavour. Excellent…

2014 Ladoix
Blend of Combottes, Chaillots and Chagnots.
A bright central note and base of citrus aroma. Mineral, energetic, lots of action here. Bravo! Even a little minerality towards the finish. Lovely – even tannin in the finish…
2014 Meursault Les Pellans
Wide and pretty Meursault nose. Lovely line and intensity here. Growing mid-palate and finishing complexity. This is super. Nice mineral and again tannin in the finish.

2014 Puligny-Montrachet Le Trezin
Bigger, rounder nose but with energy too. Some gas here, but from the mid-palate this has a very good growth of flavor before narrowing again into the finish.

2014 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Sous les Puits
Old vines from 1932/33.
Reductive. Again gassy but here with more open intensity and flavour complexity.

2014 Corton-Charlemagne
Over 2 ha from Pougets, Languettes, Rognet et Corton, Basses Mourottes and Hautes Murottes…
Deep but open nose, sweet citrus notes. Large, round, but super texture and intensity. Really lovely line of flavour. Excellent.
