Jean-Luc on 2023:
I can be quite happy if 2024 is as good as 2023! We had no hail here in 23 either – the volume was very good and the grapes were very satisfying – here on the slopes we suffered a little less from the dryness as the plains – it used to be the other way around! And 400m altitude has a nice balance in this climate – we even have north-facing slopes at altitude – okay the soils are great, but when I was younger, I could never have imagined they would be planted and producing ripe grapes! I suppose the only negative was that we had to battle oïdium so hard in the chardonnay – triaged out it makes no difference to the quality but certainly the quantity.

Jean-Luc on 2022:
“I’m happy but the volume was lower than in 2023. I see an extra freshness in the 2023s at this stage though. We had 30mm of rain just a few days before the harvest in 2023 and I think it changed the balance. 21 was more difficult but the run of vintages we’ve had since 2018 – it’s an embarrassment of riches…”

The wines…

Whilst I only noted one wine ‘great,’ there a precision of flavour here – in all the wines – that is quite rare…

2022 Beaujolais Villages Poivre & Sel
Bottled last summer.
Round, ripe, darker fruit it’s a fine invitation. Airy and fresh, this is incisive wine with an obvious structure but such juicy energy and fruit bringing fine balance. That’s going to be a super wine – but you should wait 2 years… And the commercial vintage is currently 2020 here so perfect!

2022 Beaujolais Villages “Jarre”
A larger nose with a powdery depth and a floral top line. More fluid wine – structure is hidden here – only a small hardness right in the finish. Juicy again and floral finishing – this is excellent and maybe wait, in the first instance, only about a year…

2023 Beaujolais Villages “Jarre”
This still in elevage
A younger fruit, some suppleness but fresh too. An extra breadth of flavour, almost incisive. A finish that’s got plenty of material, almost a dry extract in the finish. A wine that impresses this early in its life…

Les Whites…

2023(!) Beaujolais Villages Blanc Nos 2 Elles
2 parcels in Le Perréon on granite-rose. All tank elevage and this already in bottle for 1 month…
An open freshness and perfumed sweetness. A delicious entry, some generosity but this is juicy and shows an inviting sucrosity – the length impresses. Very tasty wine.

2022 Beaujolais Villages Blanc Nos 2 Elles
A more mineral width, slightly harder. In the mouth there is width and a small creamy richness – the finish a little more intense. The 23 is much the easier of these 2 to drink today but here is a quite mineral length of fine persistence.

2020(!) Beaujolais Villages Blanc Deux Hivers
New cuvée – two years in barrel – demi-muids but new with only a light toast.
A more cushioned nose – depth but not overtly of the barrel. This is large scale in the mouth with and energy and fluidity that you
