Willaim & Steve on 2023 & 2022:
“2023? Well, the volume is super and fortunately the quality too. It was about the same volume as in 2022 but it was achieved with a more severe green harvest. The old vines still gave only 20-25 hl/ha. The 2022s are all bottled – the Bourgognes just before the harvest and most of the rest in December – which was slightly earlier than we normally do – not because we lacked 2021s but because they tasted so good!!”
The wines…
A wonderfully delicious range here 2022 – many on the cusp of great – but all are bottles that you may drink rather quickly – they are sooo good !!
2022 Bourgogne Côte d’Or
Parcels in the bottom of Pommard – no new barrels here.
A round, comforting red fruit – that’s a good invitation. Supple, nicely round but here is a depth of concentrated flavour too. Large scale and delicious, slightly stony…
2022 Beaune 1er Chouachoux
Older vines here – 1957. A less-seen 1er that sits below Vignes-Franches.
A little more direct red fruit, faintly metallic with iron – bloody! Supple, really wide but growing more mouth-filling and round. That’s got a really lovely, but still open, finishing intensity… Delicious wine.
The high part next to the ‘hospices’ – this was the third vintage organic but it’s the 23 that will wear the AB emblem. 65 yo vines…
More obviously direct and pure – precise. Fine structure, growing large in the mouth. Palate staining finishing intensity – Ooh I love that finish – saturated, deep and sustained. Yes!!
2022 Volnay 1er Brouillards
On the side of the vineyard near Mitans
That’s a very pure red fruit – I like it a lot. Wide, intense, growing extra intensity – growing extra mouth-watering energy too – almost juicy. The finish saturates the palate again – so much depth and persistence, faintly, faintly drying. Another top Brouillards in this vintage.
2022 Pommard Les Très Terroirs
Vines all around the village
Extra freshness – fine red-fruited purity – a direct style of aroma with growing florals. Energy here – I like the structure too. The tannin frames the flavours but with hardly any grain and just the most modest dryness. This has so much character. I love it!
2022 Pommard Cuvée William
This was always made in new 228-litre barrels – this year it’s still all new but now in a 400-litre – the steps to the cellar hardly allow for larger…
A little more compact but clean, pure dark fruit – just with some faintly spiced lift. I like the shape and energy of this in the mouth – a little more direct and fluid but with that frame of tiny tannin grains. Holding broad, tasty finishing flavour – lovely wine!
2022 Pommard Perrières
Opposite Epenots but vines from 1925 – horse-ploughed. Have started to raise the trellising to 2.3 metres here – will do half like this to compare to the ‘classic’ pruning.
Airy, higher-toned, almost granular complexity to this aroma. Hmm, this is a beauty – a certain calm to the flavours but flavours that melt, deliciously, over the palate. The furry tannin frames the finish again but not too dry and remains delicious – I love it (again!)
2022 Pommard Noizons
Again very old vines – these from 1942
A higher-toned nose – fresh and perfumed. Larger scale in the mouth – the tannin present but less overt than in the Perrières. Juicier and showing a little barrel-cream in the finish – but in another 18-24 months it should be gone. That’s a lovely wine again…
2022 Pommard 1er Les Arvelets
Replanted 4-5 years ago – a ‘tres, tres fin’ clone
A larger nose – fine volume and suggesting a nice texture too. Wide, juicy, just delicious wine – the finest of tannic grain and no dryness. That’s remarkably fine for such young vines – simply excellent Pommard 1er !!
2022 Pommard 1er Rugiens
Vines from ’81 – the bottom of the top part of the vineyard – next to Armand Heitz.
Some aromatic volume here – almost an almond (nut) style to these aromas. I really like the fluidity of these flavours yet it’s also a more compact wine today than the Arvelets. The finish has more depth here though – and what a delicious finish.
And le white:
2022 Bourgogne Blanc
With a ‘micro-negoce’ there’s more white to come in 2023…
That’s got a fine intensity of precise citrus fruit – it’s very inviting. Fine scale and there’s plenty of sucrosity to deal with the previous reds. Easy but delicious finishing and holding nicely. That’s a very good Bourgogne.
