Julien on 2023:
“It went well – the wines are very Beaujolais and we had a decent volume too. They have less visible structure – they have concentration but a little less sun, despite good maturity – a more gamay style fruit…”
Julien on 2022:
“Most were bottled in July of 2023, the last one was done in October. Here, 2022 was a complicated vintage – 30-35 hl/ha – a lot of grapes were grilled by the late afternoon sun. It’s a vintage whose wines we like though – some are already almost sold out… I think it’s a lovely vintage and I’m just worried that people might drink them too quickly!”
The wines…
What a fantastic selection from Julien but wines that I think need 2-3 years in general – but no worries if you choose to wait for 10 years !! Excellent or great in this vintage !!
2022 Brouilly le Folie
On the hill of Saburin – the high part so it was a very small harvest in 21
Freshness and depth but there’s obvious concentration here too. Mouth-filling, intense and juicy with mainly dark fruit, even a hint of licorice. This mouth-watering energy really brings a fine balance. Keep it a while and you will be rewarded…
2022 Brouilly Les Baloquets
More volume and a more brambly black fruit impression – almost a little menthol too. Really wide – panoramic – intense again – but another wine that’s just so juicy. The black fruit dominates but it’s fresh and interesting too – slowly, slowly, fading…
Blue rock. Lieu dit Brouilly but there may be a name-change in the works here as the INAO doesn’t allow ‘CdB Brouilly…’ Half foudre elevage for this – the previous were just from cement tank.
Not the widest but here is an impressive depth of aroma – opening and becoming nicely floral. More volume here – a wine with scale – vibrantly energetic, a little licorice and a fine velvet tannin. Really broad finishing – like the previous wines majoring on the backer fruit but so very long – that could be a great one!
From Bruhlié, this the wine that was bottled in October.
A little aromatic ease, complexity of aroma with even a hint of tobacco to add to growing flora perfume. Incisive, fluid, driving with mouth-watering energy – what a great wine – but wait 2-3 years – you should do that for all here. The finish just keeps rolling along – love it !!
These 135-year-old vines have no maladies and manage to deliver 35 hl/ha without trouble. Left side of the hill, high up plain west-facing, close to Chavannes. ‘Always a good maturity indeed early ripening.’
A small creaminess from the barrel elevage but here is a silken width of aroma. Super in the mouth, with a tannin that has no grain just a small textural drag then essence of pure fruit encased in velvet. Always large in scale – even in the finish – also a great wine – and this modest oak will no-longer be visible in 2-3 years.
And for the road, already in bottle:
2023 Brouilly La Folie
The first and only wine bottled so far – done in March.
A different, more cliché gamay fruit nose – energy but depth here too. So broad, and beautifully textured too – I love the concentration that’s on display here. Broad and delicious – a wine that flirts with but never quite delivers gentian – but also a wine that I’d be drinking before most of his 22s !!
