A few words on 2024, so far:
“All the work has been complicated as the rain punctuates everything.”

Michel on 2023 & 2022:
“For the 2023s I’m happy. 2022 was good too with a normal rendement. Likewise, 2023 brought a good yield in good shape. We risked multiple things in 2023 – but I think we got through – but I’m sure it will be quite variable because there were some walls of fruit in July – some will have done green harvests but without the heatwave before the harvest, it would have been hard to ripen everything !! 2022, 03 September harvest debut. There’s a nice density but the wines are accessible too – they have always tasted rather well from the start of elevage. The vintage is all bottled, the bottling finished 2 weeks ago. We didn’t bottle everything at the same time, of course, we started before the 2023 harvest until the bottling of the 4 Chambolles in the first week of April – with a good moon…Michel on 2022:
“Yes I’m happy – it was a good volume – a good volume but not lots and lots. It was hot for a time but we had a big episode of rain at the end of June – and that got us through the rest of the growing season with a few drops again at the end of August – I think these rains saved the vintage for use but it’s a good vintage and a volume that we haven’t seen since 2018 – just a bit less than 2018.”

The wines…

The Savigny is a great villages this year and the range as a whole is simply excellent – and will keep. Lovely 2022 wines from Michel though I actually liked his 2021s even more…

2022 Bourgogne Côte d’Or
Commune of Chambolle fruit blended with some from Gilly and Morey. Manual harvest, half barrel, half tank elevage.
Dark, glossy fruit. In the mouth the shape and density are good – the tannin very fine. Here is a wine of concentration and fine fruit – you could drink it now or even better in 10 years

2022 Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits
From Concoeur above Vosne on the hillside, nearly 60-year-old vines with a limestone soil. All manual harvest.
More direct and fresh – all barrel elevage, 15% new. There’s width in the base of this aroma though. Hmm, more energy and a bit more structure – but a lot more open and delicious too vs the BCD today – that’s a super Bourgogne – certainly excellent!!

2022 Savigny-lès-Beaune Dessus les Vermots
2014 the first vintage.
Deeper aromas of a smoky oak. Good scale and simply excellent texture. The wine is delicious despite its oak and with the texture of fine velour – that’s a top Savigny villages – though I’d be waiting at least 3 years for the oak to fade… The finish is super…

2022 Nuits St.Georges Les Charmois
From Les Charmois – 47-year-old vines in a slightly colder area so harvested late like HCDN, ‘It’s not windy but it’s cool here.’
A more compact nose but with a touch of extra freshness. Like the Savigny this has a beautiful texture coupled to cool fruit flavour. Extra width and energy to this flavour too. There’s a suggestion of structure but hardly austere enough to keep me from drinking this already – some small finishing bitters contributing to this flavour. I think it will hold beautifully for 10 years such is its balance !!

2022 Chambolle-Musigny
Around 8 different parcels. All the parcels except the Fremiers – which is the old vines cuvée…
Directly a wine of floral interest – completely different to the previous wines. Open, in fact rather wide flavours – again with some interesting bitters forging the complexity – but certainly a more perfumed style vs the Nuits. Long again with the small bitters – that’s a beauty and it’s very Chambolle…

2022 Chambolle-Musigny Fremiers Vieilles Vignes
From Les Fremiers and mainly 85+ year-old vines – selecting some for a massale selections. 0.70 hectares.
A narrower, more focused nose, floral but guarded at the same time. More direct and more mouth-watering – almost juicy. I love the architecture of this – there’s nothing hard about the structure but this is a wine that will get better and better – I might already be tempted to try one in a couple of years – but 10-20 will also be completely fine – a super ‘villages.’ A small hint of the barrel but only very late in the finish today – it will be gone in 6 months…

2022 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Gruenchers
Vines from 1986
A width of aroma but a little tighter in the higher tones. In the mouth, this has extra roundness vs the VV – it’s a little softer too. The flavour is more complex – a delicious wine – but today I think I slightly prefer the more angular energy of the VV !! This is larger in this finish tough…

2022 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Groseilles
80-year-old vines
Again less impact than the VV but here is a beautifully open and airy aromatic – it’s a lovely invitation. Hmm, seamless, beautifully textured wine – only towards the finish rises a small grain of tannin – ultra-small-grained. Larger again the finish – not overt concentration but apparently more than for the Gruenchers. That’s a beauty!

And to finish, the domaine wine:

2022 Bourgogne Chardonnay
Also bottled
Fresh, airy, almost steely width of aroma. Large in the mouth – concentrated but allied to fine energy too. A modest structure but these flavours melt over the palate – I think a lovely shape, just wait a year or two for ‘deliciousness’ !!
