Julien on 2023:
“I’ve 9 hectares but 1.5 ha in Morgon was 80% hailed… though I still nearly made my volume for the whole domaine. Some areas I think I had a bit too much quantity but overall I’m very happy with the vintage”
Julien last year on 2022:
“I had a bit of hail in the mid-slope in Morgon but I still managed 38 hl/ha and even managed to buy a some organic grapes! I think the wines could really be as good as in 2019 – I do very little intervention – there are no faults – that I’ve noted. I’m quietly confident.”
The wines…
Another super vintage here chez Julien – always delicious wines – and now his new cuverie is in use too !!
2022 Beaujolais-Lantignié Wild Soul
‘Pur Jus’ on the label and cork to indicate that these are bought grapes from friends. All declassified Regnié. Not filtered, 0 free sulfur but about 10 milligrams was added during the vinification
Nice depth to this nose – sleek and silky – slowly widening. Hmm, a little gas for extra freshness – lovely texture – the wine spreading out over the palate. Supple and delicious, holding a fine finish.
The lowest-lying vines. Part foudre and part 228-litres – 10-15 years old. All the clusters, not filtered and a 10mg addition of sulfur for the bottling
Open, cushioned, perfumed – really inviting – yes! Hmm – mouth-filling, with a small grain of tannin – indeed, hardly a grain. Perfumed flavour, intense – love it – potentially a great!
2022 Morgon
Red waxed topped. Still 6 parcels combined for 2.8 ha – but have recently bought some organic grapes from half a hectare of vines from a vigneron in St.Joseph
Less forward but good width and slightly foral perfumed – a very pretty but coy nose today. A more structural shape but not a bit hard – but with juicy, complex, red fruit – very easy to drink – a delicious drink – and not a structure that would stop me drinking this wine today… ‘but it’s always better in a year‘
1 ha of Grand Pres at the bottom of Fleurie, the other part from high. There was a new foudre here so I find an accent from that – it was 30% of the cuvée’
A fine depth of dark fruit – more floral perfume in the top notes. Hmm, width, fluidity, a small grain of tannin supporting really delicious flavour – that’s clearly a great wine and will just get greater over the next years…
