Laurence on 2021:
We are right at the end of the 2020s so we will be changing to 21 very soon – but it’s a hard vintage for us, for instance, we have no Petit Chablis anymore – but maybe I can still find a bottle to taste! We had about half a harvest in volume in 2021 – which is poor – but I realise that many suffered worse than we did here… Have some parts with heating cables and vs the neighbouring vines the difference was night and day – these parts made almost a normal volume!

Laurence on 2020:
Happy with the wines and the volume was only a little low, so virtually normal. I think it’s properly balanced and has both freshness of fruit and minerality in good balance – I think of 2015 – I find more ripe fruit in 2019, the 2020s are more typically Chablis and stony in style – for keeping a while. From the perspective of working in the vines it was a hot but a relatively easy vintage but we harvested the end of August. We chose to acidify a little as the acidities were low – we had a little frost – but not too much in the way of damage – we had to get up early to check 4 times. We also had a small amount of hail in Fourchaume in May but given the timing and lack of intensity not too much to worry about.

The wines…

Some super wines – I draw your attention, also, to a couple of great, later bottled, 2019s…

Currently, it’s all ‘technical corks’ of Trescases just at the moment – there was a time with DIAM but then one cuvée had a problem and the bottler and DIAM were blaming each other and it was really difficult to get a resolution – so today it’s just Trescases… There are also plenty of screw-caps in use at this domaine too. ‘Both work well, it really depends on a particular market’s acceptance.

2020 Petit Chablis
Hmm, that’s a lovely nose, not so wide but with lovely fruit and white flower complexity. Hmm, that’s a nice and incisive start – wide, powerful for the label and growing in intensity. I’d keep this a year or say but I find it a very impressive wine – a great PC with a properly mineral finish!

2020 Chablis
That’s a very attractive nose – broad. Extra large and more directly mineral in the mouth with a growing intensity that cuts the richness with ease. That’s a really tasty wine.

2020 Chablis 1er Fourchaume
An even nicer width of aroma – that’s very attractive again. Wide, vibrant – extra purity, lovely energy – that’s an absolutely excellent wine. Fluid but powerful finishing – really super.

The rest of the 20s not bottled so we can taste their equivalents from 2019:

2019 Chablis Vieilles Vignes
A more open width of aroma – more concentrated, riper fruit but with fine clarity. I like the shape in the mouth, it’s concentrated, tasty, generous wine with great texture too – super intensity and very mineral in style in the finish. Not the same tension as the 20s but clearly a very tasty wine.

2019 Chablis Demoiselles
Parcel selection – planted in 1986 – south-facing vine.
Also with ripeness to this aromatic fruit but more open, airy and showing a hint of salinity. More direct, more mouth-watering, in fact absolutely mouth-wateringly delicious. That’s a great 2019, there’s the ripeness but it’s more background and here brings plenty of tension. Bravo 19
2019 Chablis 1er Homme Mort
Hmm – that’s a sizzling width of more golden but vibrant fruit. Hmm, like the previous but a little more impact in all directions – ripeness, minerality, vibrantly mouth-watering, finishing with a little tension and a lot of chalky minerality in the finish. That’s another top 19! Bravo!
