Denis on 2019:
“Well, 2019 was definitely a sunny year, but we still had to wait for our harvest as there was some blocking of the maturities – the berries were often ripe but not yet the pips. The wines are concentrated, though, perhaps a little rich. Now all are bottled, and natural cork is used for all.”
The wines…
The ever-happy Denis underscored why he’s always smiling – a super result from this mix of 2019 and 2018 wines!
2019 Macon-Chardonnay En Serre
Young, 5-year-old vines. All organic, the vineyard in the direction Tournous – all tank elevage.
Open, perfumed, a quite heavy floral, almost muscaté, nose. Round, quite mineral – this has a ripe citrus fruit but no fat – despite an obvious concentration. The finish also the heavy, slightly muscaté style but long tasty and very perfumed…
Vines in Leynes – south-west facing. All barrel elevage, no new barrels
A finer nose, very classy and certainly an invitation. A big, fresh, ball of energy. A lovely ‘open’ never heavy style – that’s simply a wine to drink and drink. Bravo!
2018 Viré-Clessé
A narrower, more obviously lime-fruit style of aroma. 2/3 tank elevage. Bigger, more overtly mineral, a cool style to this wine, a little harder minerality, but with such a persistent finish. Give this some time for the structure to soften a little, a super finish though – give this 1-2 years before attacking. Excellent wine.
All from Solutré, at the foot of the rock.
A compact nose but of clarity and a suggestion of density too. Mouth-filling – really plenty of energy here – growing in stature, always complex and mobile, as you enter the finish more layered and wide – this is a top wine – you should wait a little while but this will bring you great reward – bravo!
