The wines…
A shame to miss out on most of the 2019s – but, as you will see, the 2018s were impressive substitues!
Caroline is the ‘better half’ of Frantz and showed his wines too. Because a number of the wines were due to be bottled the same week I tasted, Caroline preferred to substitute them with 2018s::
2019 Mâcon-Villages Clos St Pancras
A clos of over 2 hectares – this wine with a test cork – an amalgum in the middle capped by normal cork.
Pretty notes of green fruit – not a big nose. Driving with freshness and lime-citrus mouth-watering flavour. That’s a lovely little wine – completely delicious.
2018 St.Véran, La Cote
High vines in a windy place on the Mont Pouilly.
Very fresh, mineral, not a big nose again, a slight note of oak. A little gas, some oak in the width of the flavour here. A gorgeous finish though – complex floral, wow finish – but wait 2 years for the oak.
A more compact nose but still with clarity and freshness. Wider and growing more intense, and there’s a good salinity here too. Mouth-watering, almost a suggestion of tannin. The oak perfectly absorbed here. Bravo!
More direction Chasselas, later maturing vines – and very old vines, previously with very low yelds ‘but with biodynamics they have improved a lot.’
A smaller nose again but showing a nicely elegant touch of citrus. Vibrant, nicely mineral. This wine needs a touch more patience than the last but this has energy and such a deliciously full flavour. Bravo again.
