Damien on 2022:
“The volumes were good almost everywhere – it was a good year with nice grapes. We were just a little down on volume for the whites due to the frost. We could keep some good freshness in the wines I think. Not too sunny a vintage in style – we can see proper distinctions between the wines and areas.”
Damien on 2021:
“We had 4ha in aspersion – so whilst not the normal volume, it wasn’t bad. In St.Bris and Irancy you can say a catastrophe – 20% of a normal volume – a number of wines have already been sold out so there are some early 22 bottlings to try to compensate – already since January. So let’s see what we can find that hasn’t been sold:”
The wines…
Last year, I noted a few 2020 wines with green notes here – but the 21s were clean and delicious – such lovely wines – particularly the entry wines. Bravo!
Just 2 reds to taste at this stage – some sold out and others not yet bottled. The Irancy parcel selections are probably not going to be bottled until after the summer:
2021 Bourgogne Côtes d’Auxerre Pinot Noir
Pinot vines in St.Bris – south-facing but with cooler soils near the wood of St.Cyr. Normally this is all tank elevage but because of the low volume they used old barrels.
A nice core of vibrant red fruit. Silky, direct, proper concentration – slow-moving waves of finishing flavour – almost a little creamy and generous finishing. I find this excellent!
2021 Irancy
This cuvée representing 11 hectares in 2021…
Hmm – a more vertical nose – there’s some greenery but this complexity suggests cooking herbs – a bouquet garni – rather than pyrazines. Wider, silky texture then a little fine grain so more velour – direct and fine finishing. Yum!
Les Whites:
Hmm – that’s a super nose – an energetic blend of citrus. Vibrant – tons of complexity – the flavour melting across the palate – still juicy and almost dynamic finishing – that’s a great aligoté!
Vines in St. Bris – this with a manual harvest. Like the red – normally 50% tank but that amount much reduced in 2021.
A deeper register but complex and highly attractive aroma. A hint of gas showing but broader over the palate – equally energetic, a hint more mineral – also a super and quite juicy wine – also a faint creamy note in the finish. For the label another great wine.
2021 Chablis
2 ha in Courgis – ‘if it frosts we expect to lose this but we still had some!’
Slightly more ripe if not quite exotic fruit. Hmm – extra intensity and wider. This is – vs the the previous two wines – ultra-mineral, and cool, in style – long finishing – excellent villages…
2021 Chablis 1er Beauroy
Normally with half old barrel elevage. Was bottled in June.
Here a ripeness of more grapefruit style. In the mouth too red grapefruit and/or even blood orange – that’s a lovely flavour – another simply excellent wine that finishes cleanly with an invitation to take more…
2021 St.Bris
Only sauvignon blanc, no gris… Almost sold out already.
A deeper nose – not quite pungent but with a weighty depth. Wide, bubbling with energy. Then small complexities – intensities – finishing precise and complex. Another tasty wine.
