Stéphane on 2022 & 2021
We are very happy with 2022 – and there was some volume too! Our harvest started 26 August but lasted three weeks – it was the longest harvest I ever experienced – we harvested, we stopped, we harvested again – we missed an afternoon as it was too warm and it continued in that vein. Back to 2021, it was difficult for many reasons – we brought in the harvest as quickly as we could – under the rain because there was some rot later that we hoped to avoid. 2021 was a vintage of work in the cellar – some vintages are easier, others take their time in elevage. We more seriously removed the bourbe from these wines to ensure no bad flavours.

The wines…

Multiple cuvées that are worth a special search – but good luck finding them – a great vintage here…

Practically all the corks here are NDTech – i.e. an Amorim product that is individually tested to guarantee them TCA free. One wine was sealed with an amalgum cork – The ‘Maison’ Montée de Tonnerre:

2022! Domaine, Chablis St.Martin
Usually an assembly of about 42 hectares from 60 hectares, with separate elevage – many terroirs – using old foudres 15% for the elevage. The aim is to add a little density. Never the same parcels used, always selected blind. In bottle a few weeks now. This is the definitive assembly but not the last bottling of this cuvée.
A sweetness of fruit in this width of aroma – some Chablis character her. Hmm – that’s really very good – energy, salinity, growing with some citrus bitters in the finish.

2021 Domaine, Chablis Vieille Voye
From 6.5 ha below Les Lys. The vines are over 75 years old. Elevage in foudre then finished in stainless steel with all the lees. Vieille Voye reflects the nearby Roman Road – bottled only in December.
Less impact, more airy and more perfumed. Incisive, saline – super architecture – bravo – I love! So often a favourite of mine, this hits the spot – long and saline finishing too.

2021 Domaine, Chablis 1er Les Vaudevey
A slightly reductive agrume aromatic here. The similar reductive agrume – great shape again – almost a hint austere today – keep this 18 months. Simply excellent wine.

2021 Domaine, Chablis 1er Beauroy
The first year with all barrel elevage for this wine.
Also a subtle reduction – here with an extra width of aroma – becoming more floral with air. A little rounder but no barrel flavour – complex – an extra depth of middle and finishing flavour – super. That’s a great Beauroy.

2021 Chablis 1er Côte de Lechet
Only 0.20 ha at the domaine – 10k plants per hectare – that’s HD for here – all done by hand – less than 1,000 bottles in this vintage
This nose is a little more direct, sweeter too but that sweetness quickly turns to floral perfume. Broad, a little muscle is evident here too, finishing a little chalks – excellent wine.

2021 Chablis 1er Vaillons Vieilles Vignes
80% Roncières and some Chatains
A more vertical nose but also very attractive perfume. Open, lovely clarity, vibrantly flavour – this quite dynamic in style, holding in the finish too – potentially a great Vaillons!

2021 Chablis 1er Butteaux
4th vintage – domaine – 18-year-old vines, the young vines previously in generic 1er cru or Champs Martin, half a hectare.
A beautiful width and clarity of aroma – perhaps the best so far. Properly structured, fine and mouth-watering. A little creamy aspect from the 100% barrel elevage – I’d wait 2 years to start drinking this – There’s a chance it could be even better in the future, today it’s still excellent.

2021 Domaine, Chablis 1er Montmains
All from Montmains – the higher part – 45-year-old vines.
More airy and even more attractive aromatics – it is so often like this chez Laroche. Broader, more structural – painfully young – austere only because of youth. Plenty of salinity. I have bought more Montaminas (from multiple sources) than any other cru in the last years – I think this could be added to that list – bravo!

2021 Chablis 1er Montée de Tonnerre
Also contracts – this DIAM-sealed – though the domaine politic remains with cork.
Less width but a strong core of more mineral aroma. Beautifully vibrant and wide over the palate – almost a dynamic energy to this wine – tons of complexity. Super finishing too – it’s the best part of this wine – the rest is more than very good – the finish is great.

2021 Domaine, Chablis 1er Fourchaume Vieilles Vignes
Back to a domaine wine. Mainly Homme Mort but also Cote de Fontenay – the domaine takes their massale selections from here too. Vines from 1951.
A silky width but not a very open width of aroma. Super in the mouth, direct yet still with width – properly mineral but without any sharp or hard edges – faintly of the barrel in the middle and finishing flavours – super wine.

2021 Chablis 1er Homme-Mort
Since 2018, 1,500 bottles per year. All barrel but there’s larger formats – always a barrel selection.
Another more vertical nose – tighter than most. Plenty of sweetness and a really open, almost airy style to this wine – of the sea, saline – and then a vibrant peak of finishing flavour – a simply great finish. The rest of the wine will require a year or three to catch up with the finish – but I’m confident that it will – bravo!

2021 Domaine, Chablis Les Bouguerots
ottled December. All demi-muids – 600 litres. High-density planting – for here – 10k
Ooh – that’s a super nose – impact, agrume aromas – almost some orange fruit flesh in this wine. Extra mouth-filling – juicy, love the shape of this – a tiny young, austerity, finishing with fine citrus bitters. Simply excellent grand cru.

2021 Chablis Les Clos
From the bottom of the hill.
Much more open so showing its extra complexity with ease and aplomb. Nicely shaped, properly constructed, completely super wine.

2021 Domaine, Chablis Les Blanchots
7 different parcels – 4.5 hectares. All these GCs – except the final one – bottled in December.
A more open perfume with lots of supporting density. A generous wine but still never a heavy wine – growing in small energetic complexities. The finish with a little extra sweetness a wine that fades in the memory only very slowly – another superb wine.

2021 Domaine, Chablis Blanchots Reserve de l’Obediance
Always the best tasting parcels – blind. The volume of this varies year by year – all based on tasting each barrel – but it’s rarely as much as 25% of their Blanchots that makes it into this cuvée. But there always seems to be some particular parcels that get the nod – but not always the oldest vines – they really like a planting that they did in 2013 too! This will be bottled tomorrow, it was filtered 10 days ago – almost always a selection of 3k bottles.
A finer core of aroma – almost a perfect mix of fruit and flowers – yes! Large scale, more open, less overtly generous, such vibrant complexity as you head into the finish, tons of middle salinity then a finish that haunts. Always impressive, almost always great in 21 this is surely great – bravo!
