Jonathan on 2021:
The volume came in at 23 hl/ha – which was the same as we produced in 2020 but for a very different reason. In 2020 it was the dryness – a little like 2022 – but 2021 wasn’t dry! The hillsides actually had quite good yields but in a couple of hectares at the bottom, we lost the most and that was due to the maladies.

The wines…

Not wines of impact or concentration but still, and importantly, of intensity and class. Wines that are delicious and drinkable – a super range of faultless 2021s.

2021 Brouilly, La Croquant
An assembly of grapes from pink granite soils – this with all tank elevage. ‘My spring cuvée – vinified to be an easy drink.’
Medium-plus colour. Airy, lower sulfur slightly reductive – but attractive. Supple, easy over the palate, fine red fruit – simply delicious wine. Finishing easy, sweet and moreish – excellent!

2021 Brouilly Les Trois Loups
Young vines facing the domaine – 10-years-old – direction Pierreux with a blend of soil types – blue-stone but also more alluvial soil. Here with foudre elevage, but relatively short.
A more direct and pure, acidulated red fruit nose – lovely. A faint gas – more energetic wine – supple at the base – faintly tannic but hardly any grain. Faint but fine finishing – another lovely wine – and quite young still.

2021 Côte de Brouilly La Baraquée
Also from pink granite but from a single parcel
A nose that recalls La Croquant – slightly more perfumed. More direct, juicier – vibrant, properly structured – juicy wine – that’s simply excellent – in fact, it’s great finishing!

2021 Brouilly Pierreux
Old vines here with longer elevage – a rare Brouilly on blue-stone
Deeper, vibrant, slightly reductive. Lovely over the palate – open wine, fluid and juicily delicious. Faintly dry finishing. Top!

2021 Côte de Brouilly L’Heronde
Finer red fruit – almost acidulated like Les Loups – super. Fine and juicy – like all of these wines, open and delicious – the finish has a little extra something – another dimension.

2021 Côte de Brouilly Brulhié
Less fruit but more perfume – a lovely perfume. Broad but still with intensity – flavours washing over the palate – more complex for sure – perhaps less focused. Beautifully finishing – a wine with more, that I might be tempted to wait a little longer to to drink – but lovely wine!

And for the road:

2022 Brouilly, La Croquant
A fuller nose, slightly darker fruit but still an inviting aromatic. Extra depth to this flavour too – vivid flavour – absolutely delicious wine – bravo!
