Jane Eyre on 2023:
“I think that 2023 is potentially a great year – but people have forgotten how much the fruit used to cost and are now expecting maximum yields at maximum prices – and a lot wouldn’t have ripened this year without a lot of thinning. Here and there, was chaptalisation – showing that there was too much fruit on the vines.”
Jane Eyre on 2022:
“I like and am happy with my 22s. Some are bottled – some with DIAM some with cork – I’m an absolute fence-sitter – different markets get different seals!”
The wines…
As each year, Jane has made an accessible and delicious set of wines – there’s so much to enjoy here!
2022 Côte de Nuits Villages
Modest colour due to some whole bunch. Hmm – that’s very attractive – a width of cushioned invitation to drink. Silky, just a mm of cushion, faintly spiced deliciousness with a subtle creamy accent. Top! Give this 12-18 months to ease and it will be simply delicious.
2022 Auxey-Duresses Les Crais
Bottled in May with the BJ
Deeper colour though still with plenty of wc. Darker fruit with more depth – airy and faintly herbed. A more sparkly and fresh wine – I like this energy again, the subtly austere impression balanced with a little creaminess. A very tasty breadth of finishing fruit.
2022 Pommard 1er Les Arvelets
Not bottled
Not a forward nose but such a pretty one – hyper elegant and inviting – yes! Fluid, direct, easy but with sneaky complexity – and completely delicious. Lite for a 1er cru but gorgeous to drink.
Not bottled
A broad nose, fine red fruit – more incisive. Juicy in the mouth – more intense than the Pommard, very faintly saline with super complexity for the label. That’s a great villages.
2022 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Aux Vergelesses
Bottled before harvest
Lighter colour. That’s got a very pretty nose – faintly floral. Open, a bit of starting austerity – faint – before a super burst of finishing flavour – that’s a really great finish. Tons of potential here!
2022 Beaune 1er Les Avaux
Pale colour again. A pretty and pure red fruit. Hmm, so elegant, ethereal – lite some might say – but like the Pommard so deliciously complex and almost with chewy finishing intensity – yum!
All the following are waiting for bottling:
2022 Gevrey-Chambertin
Perfumed and lovely. More structure but finely architectural – complex, darker fruit, subtly spiced too. Another wine with a good extra peak of finishing intensity. Super, and I would say classic Gevrey.
2022 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Les Corbeaux
Finer and wider – faintly redder fruit than the villages. Hmm – super – intense, silky, really mouth-filling with freshness before spreading over the palate in the finish and oh-so slowly fade. Really excellent!
2022 Corton Bressandes
Open but still reticent if that makes sense. Panoramic style, with a faintly saline edge to the flavours and so broad finishing too – also some oak spice here I think. The nose isn’t ready to play but the palate is really fine and not a bit overdone.
2022 Fleurie ‘Vendanges Entier’
This with screw-cap
Very high toned, rather floral, tending towards gentian. Hmm, melts over the palate with energy and intensity. Vibrant and delicious – sneakily long too. Yum!
2022 Fleurie
More direct, redder and intense. Deeper, broader, more cushioned, and another super finish. That’s very lovely and much more calm in style.
2022 Juliénas
A narrower but very lovely, almost textured red fruit nose. Hmm – I love the shape and style of this sinuous silky wine – the finish beginning narrow and then broadening over the palate. Super!
And le white:
2022 Santenay Blanc
A zesty nose – citrus-skin. In the mouth incisive with plenty of acidity here but also flavour energy!
