Thibaut on 2023:
“In 2023, yields were the key – and they were higher in Cote de Nuits – for the reds the yields were, overall, similar to 2018 but in the Côte de Nuits about 10% more.”
Thibaut on 2022:
“Some are already bottled, some are racked and others are still in barrel – probably all will be bottled by March. The yields were good, not exceptional, but we’re happy they were much better than in 2021. 2022 was a ripe and sunny vintage – the wines have a mix of fruit and florals that I find typical of warmer vintages – 22 was a very warm vintage but our terroirs still kept some good freshness.”
The wines…
A delicious range from Thibaut in 2022.
All the whites are sealed with cork:
2022 Bourgogne Pinot Noir
Bottled just before harvest. This a blend of Chalonnaise and Côte de Beaune fruit.
This nose has a modest but quite pretty and clean impression – some floral notes too. Mouth-filling, quite sweet, there’s intensity and a bit of structure. Easy and good.
2022 Bourgogne Côte d’Or
Vines in the flats of Pommard
A little dark spice from the barrel but there’s a width of red fruit too. More supple and easier over the palate. Extra energy and finishing dimension here – a real step up…
2022 Mercurey Vieilles-Vignes
Bottled one week.
More vertical and much deeper – sleek, darker fruit. There’s a more obvious structure, darker fruit but juicy finishing. Plenty of fine-grained tannin with a small touch of dryness. That will be delicious – actually, it already is…
2022 Savigny-lès-Beaune Montchenevoy
A new cuvée here – vines just above les Guettes
A hint of barrel smoke – pretty high-toned red fruit. Hmm – open, growing in silky intensity – a hint of gooseberry adds to the red fruit. I love this juicy flavour character.
2022 Beaune 1er Cent Vignes
In the foothills of the slope, lots of complex sediments here – ‘wines that age well but are delicious in their youth’
Higher, pretty, red fruit notes – almost crushed fruit. Very expressive, the grain of tannin frames the flavour with a little texture but hardly any dryness. A fine and tasty line of elegant finishing fruit – yum!
All the following are still in barrel:
2022 Pommard Petits Noizons
South-facing above Charmois
Broad and complex, almond, wc even a hint of creamy depth to this nose – lovely. More direct and structural, sappy style – faintly grained. That’s lovely wine but to wait for 2+ years.
Young vines – now 8-years-old.
A really fine nose of wc perfume – roses and smoke. Hmm – energy and volume – sweetness, and just deliciously flavoured. A beauty – for young vines this is a great wine.
2022 Vosne-Romanée Au Communes
A 1.8 hectare plot – since 2013. Also old vines here – ‘but the impact seems less than for the Gevrey and I see the development in bottle as always slower than the Gevreys too – by a couple of years’
Also wide and perfumed – but all destemmed in this case. More direct and intense – juicy again – quite broad finishing – clean and pure – absolutely delicious, there’s some structure but I could drink it today…
2022 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cazetiers
More vertical – height and depth but there’s some width to these top aromas too. Hmm, this melts beautifully over the palate – creamy, deep, a little structure – this is far too easy to drink – it’s delicious – despite the extra weight and modest extra structure… Broad and finishing with impressive weight.
2022 Corton Rognet
Hmm – narrower but what a lovely top note of very complex perfume – yes. Hmm, really sophisticated texture – silky, slightly cushioned, a wide wave of fresh, delicious wine – just a hint of tannic structure in the last notes. A beauty.
Les Whites…
All cork sealed:
2022 Bourgogne Chardonnay
From Maconnais, Chalonnaise and Côte de Beaune plots
Here’s a vibrant width of more golden citrus. Clean, pretty and quite direct – this is absolutely delicious – simply excellent Bourgogne.
2022 Pouilly-Vinzelles Vieilles-Vignes
A smaller but more concentrated nose. Fuller, more concentrated in the mouth too – broad. A wine of power and tasty finishing flavour – I actually prefer the more direct approach of the Bourgogne today…
2022 Montagny 1er Vigne du Soleil
Hmm – this has much more energy and complexity – so much more going on here vs the PV today. A softer wine, lots of juicy energy – love the finish – much more interesting after the softer start.
2022 Santenay Vieilles-Vignes
First vintage for this wine here.
Here is some concentration, some honey, but still with freshness. Broad, juicy, clarity to this mouth-watering flavour – it opens beautifully in the finish – so far, easily best here.
Tank samples:
2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Vieilles-Vignes
Energy, a fine open nose – of yellow fruit – banana? Mouth-filling, round, nice salinity. This eases over the palate very well. This is lovely.
2022 Meursault Vieilles-Vignes
A single parcel
Hmm – that’s a beauty – floral, complex hyper attractive – yes. There’s pep – energy – here, faintly grained and spiced. Simply excellent wine – yes – absolutely delicious.
2022 Beaune 1er Clos des Mouches
Vines towards the top and towards the middle – in this large vineyard. This still in barrel
A more calm width but still open and complex. I could say calm here too – but this is so focused and finely melting and elegant, contemplative but not lacking energy – it’s a beauty.
