Emmanuel on 2022:
“22, for us, isn’t an exceptional vintage for volume – the higher vineyards all suffered from the dryness – it’s a ‘good’ 50% less in these areas but other areas were not bad so in total it was a decent volume but not fabulous. The reds have great colours and the whites I’m still waiting to see how they turn out as the vinifications were quite slow like in 2020. We have a lot of tartaric but not much malic acidity in these wines – so the malos are fast!”
Emmanuel on 2021:
“Not all are bottled. 70% losses on average but 90% of the whites – just 4 hl/ha in Genevrières. It’s really a catastrophe – the biggest carnage since we were 100% hailed in 2013. Fortunately, we have the négoce side of the business – without that, we would have big issues. It’s five years in a row that we have had significant problems – so we’ve lost at least a couple of vintages in that time. ”
The wines…
What a great range in 2021 – but good luck finding any of these whites with 90% less volume at the domaine!
2021 Bourgogne Rouge Les Genèvrières
All destemmed and decanted from lees.
A width of aroma – plenty of freshness. A pretty red gamay fruit. Fine red fruit and energetic delicious flavour – lovely clarity of flavour here – so mouth-watering. A delicious clarity of delicious flavour here – simply excellent wine.
And Les Blancs:
A depth of attractive aroma – tighter higher tones. Energetic and mineral, almost a creamy style to this gorgeously melting flavour. Deliciously intense – bravo!
Ready to bottle, like the last.
A little higher-toned, suggesting a little lime in this citrus. Again and intensity but more direct in this case – super finishing intensity – great again!
2021 Mâcon-Cruzille Les Perrières
A little tighter aromatic – more shy. Much more saline – this has plenty of width and there’s extra depth to this flavour too – slightly more savoury but no less energetic – a faint spice to this wine – great finishing again, slightly less intense than the Mollepiere.
2021 Maison Pouilly-Fuissé 1er Marechaudes
‘Sur la Roche’ was 100% frosted.
A fine and really interesting firework reduction brings a little extra dimension to this nose. That reduction is noticeable in the mouth too – but what clean, juicy, melting mineral/citrus flavour we have here. Gorgeous!
