Sébastien on 2022:
“After 2021 have to be happy with 22 – I was surprised after the dryness and heat as I thought the grapes could have been a little grilled – but no. Volumes would be described as correct – we had a lot of grapes but the juice wasn’t plentiful so we ended up with a good average.”
Sébastien on 2021:
“We had less than in 2016 – it was the frost principally but some hail too – which was quite violent. This area delivered only 10 hl/ha. So of course much more work was required than in 2020. Nothing is bottled yet – we will start with the first Mâcons in December but the Pouillys will be in quite some time – I haven’t yet bottled all the 2020s! The 2021s are much purer wines than the warmer recent vintages.”
The wines…
Sébastien has produced a set of very moreish wines – and I simply love his Vieilles-Vignes in this vintage!
Sébastien is testing some DIAM with the 2018 and 2019 vintages, and he’s not yet convinced. He might also try the new version of Nomarcorc:
2021 Mâcon-Fuissé Vers Chânes
Two parcels, west and a little north-facing. High vines with a mix of clay and limestone here – only with tank elevage.
That’s a beautifully open and pure nose with lots of citrus complexity – lime in there too. Incisive, broad, growing a modest extra width with minerality. Holding super – fine finishing wine.
2021 Pouilly-Loché Au Bûcher
Pouilly-Loché Au Bûcher
1 ha of the domaine’s 7. 70-year-old vines – 400-litre barrels assembled after 12 months
Hmm, broad aromatics and equally broad, lime-infused, flavour here. Holding beautifully again.
2021 Pouilly-Fuissé
The cuvée that’s an assembly of multiple parcels. Here much less touched by the hail – ‘only’ 40% losses!
More yellow-citrus in style – freshness too – no oak to see – tank elevage. A bead of CO2, silky, modestly generous too. Broad finishing again – so moreish these wines!
2021 Pouilly-Fuissé La Raidillons
Also a cuvée of assembly – 3 different parcels – mainly on the hill – partly behind the church of Fuissé. Again with some 400-litre barrel elevage for 12 months before another 12 in tank.
A hint of extra minerality in this fresh width of aroma. Super clarity, more chalky minerality, the citrus energy is incisive – less fruit more structure and minerality. Beautifully shaped wine – to wait for but with great anticipation!
Vines from 1942. A single parcel of south-facing vines but on altitude – Les Belouses – a sunny, warm, area and in 21 a little less hail here. 12 months in barrel then 12 in tank.
A nose with depth but still lots of citrus complexity – lemon and lime and… Extra energy – different directions to this flavour – riper, more golden citrus flavours but with beautiful definition. I love that!
