Christine on 2022 & 2021:
2022 was good after 2021 but the first cuvées were a little short after the dryness of the vintage. In comparison, 2021 was the tightrope vintage – frost, hail, mildew and oïdium resulted in 70% losses – all the high vines were frosted on the first night and the lower vines got some frost the following day. But for the wines we return to a Burgundian vintage – fruity but with tension – in the cuverie too, we’ve forgotten what it was like to have all the alcohols and malos done in November!

The wines…

Such a consistent domaine – beautiful wines.

2021 Mâcon-Vergisson Sur la Roche
In bottle just 10 days…
Modest intensity but a width of interesting and inviting aroma. Silky, mobile, plenty of concentration – really some depth to this wine. Mouth-wateringly lovely in the finish. A really super wine.

2021 St.Véran Les Creches
East-facing and sunny with a large proportion of ‘active’ limestone – lower in altitude. Some of this with elevage in a concrete ‘egg.’ Also bottled.
Also a quite shy nose but growing in depth. Fresh, also plenty of concentration – more direct and insinuating here – that’s a beautiful finish too.

Not yet bottled:

2021 Pouilly-Fuissé Les Tilliers
Here, this was called Vigne Blanche before but this is the real lieu-dit – The assembly of two parcels fined in tank – that’s all
Yellow citrus and a very faint creamy oak. Mouth-filling and full of energy too. Love this finish with a spicy finish resembling ginger – bravo!

2021 Pouilly-Fuissé Aux Charmes
New here, from the part of Charmes ‘not considered 1er cru-worthy.’
A little more open breadth of aroma. Fuller in shape but less overtly generous that previous – open, complex, changing. Simply excellent wine again.

2021 Pouilly-Fuissé 1er Vers Cras
Solutre here – half a harvest – so less frosted.
Narrower top notes but this nose has an impressive width in its depth. Wide, cool fruit, very mineral – so juicy – almost a cascade of fresh flavour. Super wine.

2021 Pouilly-Fuissé 1er Marechaude
From Vergisson with plenty of iron oxide in this soil. It’s steep here so the work must be done by hand.
Not a large nose but one with a lovely vibration of mineral energy. Clean, mouth-filling, wiry, fit muscle. Just lovely again.

2021 Pouilly-Fuissé 1er Sur la Roche
Was ‘Clos’ here but they are not allowed that on a 1er cru label, so…. White limestone, plain south-facing. This bottled
A lovely nose, faintly yellow citrus, faintly floral perfumed – this combination is lovely. Mouth-filling, seamless – but then a faint tannin – a width, almost a wave of intensity that slowly moves you through the middle and into the finish. Just a beautiful range of wines here.
