Romain on 2021:
2021 – well, it’s not the worst volume we’ve seen – but it was close. For us, the worst was the Mâcons, where it was half a harvest but some of the cuvées were only a third. We can be really happy with the wines though.

The wines…

What a deliciously drinkable set of wines shown by Romain – a couple of properly great ones too – they are worth a special search!

Only natural cork is used here. The first 4 are bottled:

2021 Mâcon-Chaintre Les Serreuxdières
All tank elevage.
A slightly compact nose. A flavour that has a little structure and wiry muscle. Supple with a little ripe lime in this flavour. Very good texture too. Yum!

2021 Mâcon-Fuissé Les Bruyères
Plain north-facing. Some blue-stone and schist here. Not originally classed as Pouilly-Fuissé as these vines were north-facing – not frosted but then hailed – fortunately ‘only’ 40% losses…
More open, more width of aroma. Lovely melting style over the palate. Fine texture and lovely intensity – just so delicious – bravo!

2021 St.Véran Les Serreuxdières
Only old vines here.
Nice breadth of aroma again. Good yellow citrus clarity. Supple, mineral, plenty of middle concentration whilst staying mouth-watering and modestly mineral. A gorgeous long, delicious finish.

2021 Pouilly-Fuissé
An assembly of all the parcels not in the ‘climat’ wines. Only old vines planted by Romain’s grandfather.
Good aromatic width again – nicely inviting aromatics here with a faint floral perfume too. Not the largest in the mouth but still with plenty of presence is even framed with a fine grain of tannin. A very lovely wine with a faint floral extra in the finish too.

2021 Pouilly-Fuissé Clos Clos du Roy
Was Clos Reyssier but this is only villages level. Planted by Romain’s grandfather in 1936…
Extra vibrant with lovely mineral energy to the nose. Tons of gas. Energy, intensely agrume in style – growing with intensity. Long and just fabulous.

2021 Pouilly-Fuissé Les Plessys
Very old vines with less rich soil here – with fine clays from the erosion of the limestone. A mix of standard sized barrels and 600-litre demi-muids.
Narrower but still energetic and mineral with fainter citrus angles to the nose. Broader, fine texture and plenty of concentration – growing with intensity again – such beautifully drinkable wines! Great finishing…

2021 Pouilly-Fuissé 1er Les Chevrières
Only 10-20 cm of soil before hitting the rock but very red from the iron-oxides then it’s the limestone of Chaintré. All demi-muid elevage.
A narrower but fine nose – there’s some extra finesse here. A more direct wine but with gorgeous clarity of fine agrume complexity. A reprise of beautiful finishing flavour too. Great wine!
