Anaïs on 2022:
“Yes it was okay – we were still a little short of volume due to the dryness but only about 10% down in juice – and the grapes were very clean. 2019 was 30% down, 2021 55% down and 2020 was normal – but in total that’s one vintage less in the last 4 years. ”
Anaïs on 2021:
“2021 was the worst vintage because we had everything; the frost was worse the higher up the vines were situated – then hail – not at Vergisson but in Fuissé – and then the mildew. Fortunately, not too much and oïdium – but we needed 16 treatments versus only 6 in 2022 – 6 of those were done manually as it was too wet in the vineyards for tractors. Our father can’t remember another vintage that combined all the problems that you can imagine like this. But we were able to triage the oïdium pretty well. ”
The wines…
What a brilliant set of wines chez Barraud this vintage – I’d be happy to have any of them in the cellar – but two are clearly great wines.
All to be bottled in another 10 days or so – these were all tank samples:
2021 St.Véran Les Pommards
NE-facing 55 yo vines in an old quarry…
Vibrant aromas with good clarity and a slightly cushioned yellow citrus. Hmm, lovely texture and a flavour that melts over the palate – broad and satisfying in the finish.
Only barrel elevage as the volume was so low – no tank elevage this year.
Just a little broader nose but only the faintest suggestion of barrel. Supple, melting again – the base more obviously mineral but sooo good. A great finish – just a great wine!
2021 Pouilly-Fuissé En France
In Vergisson but really a very clay-based soil with some blue clay and plenty of sand too. About 4 producers of this. ‘In 21 the area most spared by the frost – the nicest grapes in the end too.’
Just a hint more aromatic volume – a faint apple note on this one. Mouth-filling, more volume here but with a faint tannin too – lovely bitters. A wine that fades in a more simple fashion today – but is just as long. Lovely wine…
2021 Pouilly-Fuissé 1er La Maréchaude ‘Clos de Verchère‘
Were happy that it as made 1er cru but less happy that they should lose their old Verchers name – but built their ‘third’ wall so can add to the label as a ‘clos!’
Not a larger nose but one with a hint of extra perfume. The most mineral, washing over the palate – almost juicy – then intensity in the finish – still with a floral accent. Simply excellent wine – if the intensity and definition become more visible it could be great!
A fine breadth of aroma – yellow citrus with a faint cushion. Here is the extra cut, the incisiveness, that the previous wine only hinted of. Broad over the palate, mineral with a growing intensity of flavour and even a little ginger spice. That’s certainly a great wine. Bravo!
