Frantz on 2022:
We worried about frost at the start of the year. A big rain at the end of June meant that we had no worries about water over the summer – a couple of smaller rains meant we could mature in a steady fashion. Starting our harvest 24 August. I think 2022 a very good vintage for us – like 2020 – since we started we averaged 40 hl/ha but we have more in 22. pH is a little higher and the style of the wine has a bit more richness than 2020 but still a nice finesse.

Frantz on 2021:
We started one month later to harvest than in 2022. Strongly frosted – some areas were 90% though. We protected 2 hectares with candles, and the areas most susceptible to frost we pruned late which definitely helped. We also had parcels in St.Véran that were badly impacted by the hail – the same storm that hit Pouilly-Fuissé – of course, these were the parcels that weren’t hit by the frost! But we kept on top of the work and luckily didn’t have too many maladies in the vines. We averaged around 60% losses but they are beautiful wines – less exotic and more complete than 13. The terroirs are very well defined there’s a lot of subtilities that are visible – which are often lost or overly hidden in some of the recent warmer years…

The wines…

Every wine is excellent – a tribute. Great work by the team here – Caroline is no-longer working at the Lafon winery in Lamartine – so is now 100% here with Frantz.

It’s cork here, apart from some screw-cap – ‘So allows me the chance to buy the best corks of 54mm.’

2021 Mâcon-Villages Clos St Pancras
A clos of over 2 hectares in the north Mâconnais near Clessé and the river – the higher part has a very limestone soil, more clay below. ‘These vines suffered the least but still only 40% of a normal harvest, despite using candles in some areas. I find more harmony in the less frosted wines.’ 11 months in foudres, bottled at the start of August.
A narrow but pretty nose with good citrus freshness. Supple, silky, wide, very fine intensity in the finish – that’s a beautiful, clinging, finish. Simply excellent Mâcon!

2021 Viré-Clessé Les Raspillères
80% losses here. Harvested at the end of the harvest as it’s later ripening place – ‘but I was also worried we might have something more vegetal if I hadn’t waited.’ Harvested at 12.4°-12-9°. Elevage in Stockinger barrels.
Freshness and a little salinity. Supple, faint gas, melting flavour over the palate. A wider finishing intensity with an attractive, lasting sweetness from a floral component.

2021 St.Véran La Fournaise
‘Our most Chablis-style wine – really white soil.’ In Prissé – only bottled one week. A little less frosted but was hailed. A long fermentation here – 4-5 months.
A modest width of aroma, suggests a faint reduction plus salinity. Hmm – that’s a beauty – melting over the palate with the generosity of lovely flavour – partly floral again. That’s completely delicious.

2021 St.Véran La Côte
Same soil type as Solutré – some depth and plenty of iron in the soil. Here was lots of frost high on the hill.
A nose that’s more direct and more mineral, indeed PF in style. Mouth-filling, ultra-silky – more overly mineral. Broad complex and again quite floral – love!

2021 St.Véran La Roche
More direction Chasselas, later maturing vines. Also the oldest vines of the domaine – 75 – producing very millerande grapes, previously with very low yields ‘but with biodynamic, they have improved a lot.’ Here from the bottom of the hill – less frosted but then lost about 25% to hail – so half a harvest – here with elevage in barrel.
More direct, floral and mineral – that’s a very inviting nose. Broad again, a little more generous and overtly mouth-filling flavour. Insistent and delicious in the finish.
