Philippe on 2020 & 2021:
Some of my 2020s are already sold out – so I’ve done some early bottlings of white 2021s. There’s still a bit of 2019 cuvées left but essentially I am lacking wine. The rendement wasn’t bad in 2020 certainly a lot better than 2021 which was not much more than half a harvest but I’m agreeably happy with the quality of those 2021s – there is concentration plus a nice fruit.
The wines…
Always well-priced – probably under-priced for the quality – this is largely an excellent range.
A single parcel normally. Grapes stay in the press for about 6 hours to take on the colour – like to do a delicate press. Bottled 1 week
A fine pale pink. That’s got an attractive invitation – fine fruit – yes! Mouth-filling – mouth-watering too. Broad tasty flavour – what’s not to like? Very tasty wine indeed! Beaujolais Rosé? Bravo!
2020 Beaujolais Villages
This is the classic cuvée. No added yeast. Vines in Beaujeu.
Deep, dark fruit but with energy and fresh clarity – nice! There’s concentration here but never anything heavy – wide and mouth-watering – a fresh cascade of flavour from this wine. I think it excellent – very moreish wine in 2020!
2019! Beaujolais Villages Vieilles-Vignes
80-year-old vines. Only just commercializing this
A vertical nose of deep and high tones – very forward and very aromatic. Direct, silky open – growing in intensity. Delicious finishing flavour. That’s just an excellent wine!
2019! Brouilly
Vines in Quincié. I tasted the 2020 equivalents in tank – the Brouilly was the more floral, both concentrated and fresh and both with some finishing sweetness – not to be bottled before (or around) the next harvest.
Much more breadth of aroma – slightly spiced and fresh darker-red fruit. Ultra-fresh, cool fruit, ingraining the palate with flavour. The texture is fine too. The shape of this says it’s for keeping a little while but another really excellent wine with a lovely, resonating, finish!
2020 Morgon
Buy the grapes from Grand Cras – this is the 4th vintage.
A nose of fresh width – not so deep or high toned but still lots of interest. Wide like the nose- really good texture too – a little roundness and a tannin that’s slightly more visible. But really fine dimensions of flavour here. Morgon construction – keep this a little while but this is very good.
2021 Beaujolais Villages Blanc
This chardonnay in Lantignié. Bottled in December
That’s a really vibrant nose – inviting too. Energetic, mineral but not too much. Wide finishing and holding onto a fine citrus/mouth-watering finish – the best part – it’s long this!
