Olivier on 2021:
“In 2021 we were converting to organic – 2022 is AB for everything here – that, plus the frost that hit the bottom of our slopes meant that there was no harvest from these lower slopes. Everything mid-slope, so about from the Moulin (à Vent) was quite correct but the result for us was 20 hl/ha on average – our Moulin à Vent yields ranging from 12-30 hl/ha…”
Olivier on 2020:
“We like the vintage. The alcohols are high, topping out at 15° with our Morgon – this the first vintage for that wine. But there was volume and much is already sold – we have a good new importer in Germany that has reserved a good chunk!”
The wines…
A very good range of wines. The Morgon perhaps betraying its (level of) alcohol with some lack of focus – but overall delicious wines and excellent Moulins!
These wines were bottled in December:
2020 Morgon Chateau Gaillard
‘Not far from here – we don’t want our vines too far away!’ Old vines, plain-south-facing – nearly 1 hectare.
A broad, open, fresh nose. Mouth-filling, fine texture – a subtle grain of tannin in support, Depth of flavour here, slowly widening over the palate with a good stony length. It lacks a little focus and crunchiness of fruit but tastes great!
2020 Moulin à Vent Champ de Cour
1.2-hectares. Just a little over 14° – elevage and fermentations exactly as the Morgon.
An extra impact to this nose – more direct. Wide, mouth-filling wine – depth of flavour with a more floral top-line. This the more perfumed wine of the two so far – lots of richness to this fruit.
2020 Moulin à Vent La Rochelle
Again, 1.2 hectares. Older barrel elevage for this – a mix of 228-litre and larger formats.
That’s even more perfumed – there’s some barrel elevage in these aromas. More energetic and mobile in the mouth. Beautiful flavour – that’s simply excellent wine – and absolutely delicious!
2020 Juliénas Les Fouillouses
1-hectare of vines, high in the Julienas hillsides with a blue-stone soil. Also with some barrel elevage.
There’s a more mineral line here – a graphite mineral aroma. Wide, silky with a slowly developing tannin. A small accent of pyrazine greens but not too much. This is a complex, attractive wine.
