More reports with Domaine Elodie Roy
I had the chance to retaste – so ‘why not?!‘
You can see Elodie’s comments on her recent vintages in my previous reports here – the principal difference being that the wines were now bottled.
The wines…
Elodie has clearly captured the potential of her barrel samples. A super range.
The Regionals of both colours use Nomacorc sugar-cane seals. The Maranges red will be bottled with a blend of Nomacorc and DIAM, the Santenay with cork – onwards, there will be a number of tests running…
2020 Maranges Le Goty
Her new cuvée: ‘Lots of millerandes so there’s wc used here.’ Vines in the plain – just a few more metres and you’re in Santenay. A bit more new oak here.
High toned and fine – that’s an airy and attractive style. A small support of fine-grained tannin a similarly small cushion of creamy oak flavour – more visible in the finish – but here’s a nice fruit – almost a crushed strawberry. Delicious!
2020 Maranges La Rue des Pierres
Elodie has 3 ha in different Maranges lieu-dits, this is the cuvée of that lieu-dit – ‘I like working with the lieu-dits as I don’t have any 1ers.’ This all destemmed – assembled in tank about 3 weeks. Vines on the hillside. Barrel elevage 30% new.
A more vertical nose and there’s depth here – a more sauvage fruit – wild strawberries is the style. Yet the texture has extra silk. Wide, lip-smacking, again very fine tannin but here the dryness is practically invisible. Super.
2020 Santenay 1er Les Gravières
Towards the north of gravières toward Clos des Tavannes, very little soil here – 10-15 cm – ‘planted 1952-53, no replacements, so that’s the real age.’ Vines between the windmill and the border with Chassagne. Some wc ‘but not much.’
Also a fine and very crushed-strawberry nose but with a little extra depth too. This flows over the palate with good width and a mouth-watering style. Mineral and nicely direct for a 2020. The finish has some drier tannin but nothing out of place. This is an excellent wine and sustains good length too…
Les whites
There are three parcels in the Hautes Côtes here, plus one in Maranges:
2020 Maranges En Buliet Blanc
A single parcel in white. Planted in 2003, the youngest vines of the domaine. Also bottled in November
A nose of some weight and a mineral width, cushioned with plenty of barrel. Super in the mouth – much more attractive than the nose suggests – mouth-watering and really vibrant. I have to say that this is completely delicious but I’d wait for the oak on the nose to subside more – maybe 12 months or so…
