Jacqueline & Matthieu on 2021:
“2021 was a bit of a catastrophe for the volume – 50% less for the 1ers, 30% less for the villages – it wasn’t just the frost, there was oïdium too. Half a harvest in total. The oïdium came very late – the beginning of September. ”
Jacqueline & Matthieu on 2020:
“Well, it began with a damp winter and too may caterpillars! There was some retarding of growth but then the vines quickly caught up – harvesting from 20 August! We’re very happy with the quality but the volume a little down – mainly in the young vines so less than a third for these. We vinified without sulfur and will be organic labelled from next year. The fermentations went well, even a few malos are starting. In 2020 we also had wine from two new parcels; Rue au Vache and Les Noriots”
The wines:
It is always a treat to taste here – too-small volumes but great wines…
“Corks from Trescases and to-date, we’ve no returns!”
2020 Bourgogne Chardonnay Petit Poiriers
Planning to label as Côte d’Or but probably from 2020, but this all from the commune of Puligny. Bottled in November.
An open, nicely concentrated but perfumed nose. Supple, subtly oaked but a long-lasting and finely fresh finishing flavour – completely delicious with direct flavour.
2020 Bourgogne Chardonnay La Plant des Champs
The young vines with low yields, here was previously planted with 1930’s aligoté…
This nose a little more direct – sweeping, faintly floral. Supple again, freshness, slowly insinuating, more layered finishing. Yum!
2020 Puligny-Montrachet Les Houlières
Direction Chassagne, made from 35-year-old vines.
Not as much aromatic impact but clearly an extra depth, and to the mineral aspects. Extra width, more perfumed with an extra depth to the flavour – less direct energy than the last today.
2020 Puligny-Montrachet Au Paupillot
Always plenty of water on the soil here as there are sources in the vines above. On the bottom road to Meursault, planted in 1974
More open top-notes, subtly with some barrel notes. Again supple, texturally attractive – nicely round and long-lasting… That’s showing beautifully.
2020 Puligny-Montrachet Derrière la Velle
Planted in 1962, 15 years older than the last, always small concentrated grapes, north-south planted vs East-West of the last.
Here the nose has a little more direction. More open and structural wine in shape but never hard. I like this extra strictness but balanced by generosity – the finish a little more vibrant and faintly saline – that’s getting very interesting now! An excellent wine.
The first year for this cuvée – before they sold the grapes.
A higher-toned and fuller nose – beautifully aromatic. Much more direct and mineral – very fluid style to this flavour – That’s really a great villages!
A very fine nose – open, pure, higher-toned clarity. Here is extra impact – more concentration, more growing depth and intensity too. Bravo again!
2 parcels, the younger 35 years old, the other planted between 1960-62
The most attractively perfumed so far – really a fine and inviting thing. Direct, pure and with fabulous clarity – grand vin! Oaked in the finish but totally balanced…
2020 Puligny-Montrachet Les Climats
All the villages and both 1ers assembled – one barrel worth, all magnums…
Again with a beautiful floral component here with more supporting depth. Wide, supple – a little less direct focus than the previous but a very beautiful thing all the same. Wide and mineral in the finish and with an extra vibrational lift in the finish too – really excellent
2020 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Hammeau de Blagny
The vines just above Puligny 1er Truffière.
Extra vibrant – fine purity with a little extra minerality showing through. Wide – a certain harmony here – zen-like in the mouth, beautifully saline finish. A beauty!
2020 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Folatières
South part in Au Chaniots (noted on the label) next to En la Richarde, there’s plenty of soil here
The nose a little less ready for this one. Great shape in the mouth – vibrant, great energy too but here’s a wine that still needs a bit more elevage. Fine citrus bitters in the finishing flavour… If the track record of this wine is anything to go by it will be great but I’m certain today, as a minimum, it will be excellent…
To finish:
Gamay-Pinot 30-70, all the stems, a short cool maceration and very little pigeage.
A joyous, forward and inviting nose of crunchy fruit. Direct and energetic – really mouth-watering, wide and mineral finishing. Yes!
