It had been far too long that this domaine had slipped from my list of regular visits – time to put that right!
Nathalie on the frost of 2022:
“Frost? We just went to the church – we have 25 hectares – what can we do to protect it all?”
Nathalie on 2021:
“The malos have been done for about 1 month now. It was a vintage yield of minus 40%, all of that was due to the frost. It wasn’t an easy vintage to grow grapes because of the rain but it was an easy year for making wine as the alcohols were generally in the region of 12-13° with good acidities, so we had no issues with slow fermentations like in 2019 and 2020 – our vines are adapted to cooler vintages than hotter ones as they were mainly planted in the 40s and 50s…“
Nathalie on 2020:
“2020 was about 30% down – the same as in 2019 – due to the dryness.”
The wines…
Just a quick look in to say hello before a more studied look at Nathalie’s 2021s in the Autumn!
We started with a couple of post-malo 2021s to get our tastebuds working:
2021 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Lavières
Thats a generously vibrant and perfumed fruit. Supple, silky airy beautifully clean wine. Broad finishing and a little mineral with a warm spice in the finish.
2021 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Champs Cheverey
‘The plants here are less fine than in Lavières, but suffer less when it’s hot and dry.‘
A bigger freshness – a different perfume with some higher tones. Wide, a cooler fruit, a hint more structure and visible grain but still fine and elegant. Finishing with a salty lick.
2020 Chorey-lès-Beaune
8 ha of Chorey brings 3 Chorey cuvées – 6 hectares for this cuvée and 2 hectares for their Chapitre Monopole.
Darker coloured of course. A tighter nose, but seemingly silky and darker-fruited, almost licorice-infused aromas. Fine energy, freshness and directness – I like the texture too. Really a super balance, you sense the tannins but not more – I could drink this with pleasure today – but clearly better if you wait
2020 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Champs Cheverey
Again so deep colour – ‘we did no pigeage.‘ A deeper nose of softer dark fruit and faint warm spice. Broad but mouth-filling, almost architectural, I love the fading balanced flavour, very faintly accented with the barrel.
A narrower, perfumed nose – thats a beautiful thing. Lovely direct, super structure, a strictness that I love. Wide finishing. Love!
2020 Beaune 1er Cru Grèves
A tight nose but slowly widening with a purity of aroma – lovely and it just keeps getting better. Wide but the flavour is more direct. Super texture, accented with a faint tannin but no grain. Carafe or keep – excellent wine…
2015 Beaune 1er Cru Grèves
More development, also perfumed but a little less overtly of violets – perhaps lilac! Much more open on the palate, mobile and mineral. Broad – here the wine takes off again in the finish. Showing very impressively!
2014 Corton-Bressandes
A complex nose – deep, lots of violets in this floral perfume with a slight balsamic highlight (vintage of suzuki!). Broad, wide and complex in the finish – a weight without weight – I’m very impressed by this finish. Still a bit young, wait 2-3 more years…
